    Yet, a dinner of poached salmon filet, spinach, a splash of olive oil, and
    simple herbs and seasonings, TASTES better to me.

    And yes, this is acknowledging the simple fact that one can, in their own
    kitchen concoct something just as evil and unhealthy.

    I first had McDonalds food in the spring of 1971, my freshman year at
    college. Upon eating my very first $.21 hamburger and (cost forgotten)
    fries, I noted that there must be something in them which was addictive,
    because I could feel something happening to me as I ate.

    I wonder if it's the MSG. I have since learned that I have to avoid
    McDonalds french fries because of their high MSG content. Of course, I
    now avoid them for other reasons, but that MSG factor remains.

    Well, I think tasting good is part of the equation, just not all of it. I
    also think a Big Mac tastes pretty good, and I enjoy fries if they are salty
    enough. But I think my nice pot roast with lots of gravy and carrots,
    onions, parsnips, and turnips also tastes great - better than the Big Mac.
    It's just that I don't ever overeat with the pot roast to the extent that I
    have in the past with the McDonalds stuff. So I conclude that there is
    something else going on besides just taste.

    extent that I have in the past with the McDonalds stuff. So I conclude
    that there is something else going on besides just taste.

    There are many reasons. Some that spring to my mind are psychological -
    mass marketing, convenience (all you have to do is drive through),
    universality (everyone who doesn't live in a cave knows what a Big Mac is).

    But strangely enough I do believe that there is a chemical side to it too.
    I agree that taste is not the entire picture, because to me, tasting the
    food side by side against something I've made at home, McD's tastes like
    [censored] (again MY opinion). Yet, there's a strange drive to constantly eat
    more and more of it.

    Junk food marketers - and NO NOT JUST McD's - are not stupid. They actually
    do want to earn a continuous living and will do whatever legal means they
    can to *guarantee* repeat customers. They probably have well guarded
    secrets as to which mixture of ingredients and chemicals will keep people
    saying "hmmm don't know what it is, but I simply can't stop eating 'em!".

    Granted, McD's *does* offer, in this day and age, some marginally healthier
    and cleaner foods than they used to, but it's not as convenient for me
    anymore, so it's a moot issue for me personally whether or not to go there,
    since I'm so used to simply buying and making my own food to my own
    exaction.

    Also, I now have 5 children, and so quality vs. expense to feed five
    children to my satisfaction there is just a bad ratio. For the same price
    and for less time, I can grill some meat and make a salad for the entire
    family. So it's no biggie.

  5. In the DVD bonus features the writer of Fast Food Nation explains the
    extraordinary use of exotic ingredients in fast food. He explained that
    just a single flavoring agent has 40 ingredients. He suggested that the
    ingredients cannot be on a hamburger wrapper because the it would require
    pages of wrapper to hold the ingredients list. Saying that supermarket
    food ingredients are just the same as fast food is not consistent with the
    movie. I guess someone didn't bother watching the movie.....

    Well, I have not watched the movie, but I do want to. It's on my "to watch"

    is quite long).

    However, I live in Canada, and have read the ingredients of frozen "fast

    long - of ingredients that I don't even care to know what they are. And
    yes, the amount of ingredients I see on a box of frozen fast-food is indeed
    too long to put on a wrapper of a hamburger. You are correct.

    So I have no opinion one way or the other about the movie itself - yet.

    However, I have an opinion about junk food, period, whether you can buy it

    An interesting article on two other people who went on a "McDiet"

    Although neither attempted a LC approach. That would be an interesting
    experiment too. Both of the above were said to have taken in "too much" fat
    at about 30% of their calories, and "not enough" carbs at about 35-40% of
    their calories. A LC approach would certainly have changed those numbers a

    |||| eating this kind of stuff in any food establishment? Heck, let's
    |||| discuss how hard it is
    |||| to avoid this stuff if you purchase food at your local
    |||| supermarket? Only those who read all the labels and make an
    |||| decided effort will have a chance,
    |||| and even then it won't be easy. But you, for some unknown reason,
    |||| expect McD, and none others, to be able to rise above.
    ||||
    ||||||
    ||||||
    ||||||| That
    ||||||||| attitude makes McDonalds *the* ideal focus for this type of
    ||||||||| documentary. They have little regard for children's health,
    ||||||||| or for anything other than profits.
    |||||||
    ||||||| Do I even need to respond? They are a corporation and provides

    ||||
    |||| I'm willing to bet money they won't because most parent will see

    ||||
    ||||||
    |||||||
    ||||||| Geez....let's blame everyone else for our problems, but take no
    ||||||| resposibility for them ourselves. Yeah.
    ||||||
    |||||| Unfortunately there are many people who simply don't realise that
    |||||| junk
    |||||| food is so unhealthy.
    ||||
    |||| Most people realize that junk food is unhealthy. Even teenage
    |||| girls know it. Just ask one.
    ||||
    ||||
    |||| Cigarettes have to have warnings on the
    |||||| packets,
    |||||| they have (in Aus) banned all public advertising and association
    |||||| with sports because they are unhealthy, so why not do something
    |||||| similar for unhealthy junk food that is promoted to kids(and
    |||||| many not so bright
    |||||| adults) as being nutritious? At least make people aware that it
    |||||| is unhealthy.
    ||||
    |||| If you had a clue, you'd realize how difficult to impossible it is
    |||| to prove
    |||| that eating one serving of any food is unhealthy. In fact, I'd
    |||| say that it
    |||| just ain't so. No one can force someone to make the effort to
    |||| maintain a healthy diet & lifestyle over the long term, and that's
    |||| the issue. Making McD look bad is not the solution and the fact is
    |||| it won't work. What is needed is mush more education of the public
    |||| about nutrition. And then you need to motivate them for a healthy
    |||| lifestyle, which also ain't gonna happen. If it were important to
    |||| people to maintain a healthy lifestyle, McD and other fast food
    |||| joints, and the contents of your local supermarket,
    |||| would be vastly different. What we get sold in all of these
    |||| places are truly a reflection of us as a whole. If we demand,
    |||| with are buying dollars, items that promote a heatlhy lifestyle,
    |||| and not the others, then it would be
    |||| offered virtually over night. Just look at how quickly the food
    |||| industry jumped on the LC bandwagon. But yet, even that's
    |||| starting to fade because of ignorance and the sheer eagerness to
    |||| make a buck.
    ||||
    ||||
    ||||||
    |||||||
    ||||||| Any steps they have taken toward
    ||||||||| realistic disclosure of the true nutritional values of their
    ||||||||| food have been slow, grudging, reluctant, and seem only to be
    ||||||||| made just in time to avoid placing themselves in legal
    ||||||||| jeopardy. Tell me that
    ||||||||| they don't know about trans fats? Why do they continue to use
    ||||||||| them?
    |||||||
    ||||||| Do I even need to respond? The transfats issue is virtually in
    ||||||| all segments of the food industry in this country.
    ||||||
    |||||| So don't support a company that uses it in almost every product
    |||||| they sell.
    ||||
    |||| Please. You'd be not supporting a lot of companies because
    |||| transfats are in
    |||| almost every processed food available. Why single out McD?
    ||||
    ||||
    ||||||
    ||||||
    ||||||||| Because they make more profit. I don't know about McDonalds
    ||||||||| over there nowadays, but here they also have had major
    ||||||||| problems and very
    ||||||||| bad publicity regarding the hiring and firing of junior staff,
    ||||||||| with underpaying and poor treatment being commonplace. They
    ||||||||| seem to have little regard for anyone, certainly not those
    ||||||||| who work for them.
    |||||||
    ||||||| This is corporate reality. Even heard of Wal-mart? Do you
    ||||||| think this is even the main message of this film?
    ||||||
    |||||| Cigarette and alcohol manufacturers are also corporate realities.
    |||||| They
    |||||| have been made to abide by rigid restrictions regarding
    |||||| advertising and
    |||||| sales to minors, why not include an industry that is doing more
    |||||| harm than both of them?
    ||||
    |||| First of all, there is no need to smoke or drink alcohol. Those
    |||| are things people do for pleasure.
    |||| Second, eating a serving of McNugguts is not unhealthy. You can't
    |||| prove it. Perhaps a sustained diet of foods with transfats is
    |||| unhealthy, but no one is forcing anybody to consume McNugguts at
    |||| every meal or to even eat at FFJ at every meal. And even if you
    |||| ate at serveral places you can still be
    |||| consuming large amounts of transfats, sat fats, and high carb
    |||| levels. So, singling out the convenients foods industry doesn't
    |||| solve any problems, because the PROBLEMS GO MUCH DEEPER THAN THAT.

    Asking the question of 'do you want that supersized' is not urging, it is

    If the guy, a normalized guy, was eating 5000 kcal per day, then he was
