After Charles Russell died, Joseph Rutherford did indeed distort Biblical
truths in order make an organization with himself as the supreme ruler. I
cannot make a blanket statement about all JWs, but I do know that many of
Rutherford's writings expressed eternal condemnation for practically anyone
who would disagree with him. The problem with Rutherford, as well as many of
his associates, is that he -- having once been a close associate of
Russell -- knew the truth concerning the "ransom for all" as given by the
Lord Jesus (Hosea 13:14; Matthew 20:28; Mark 10:45; 1 Timothy 2:5,6; Hebrews
2:9) and then became one of its strongest opponents, and thus led his
followers into the same denial.
Today, while the present leadership doesn't come on as strong as Rutherford,
most of the JWs are loyal to whatever is said by their leaders, and their
actions and conduct often reflect what their leaders have told to them to
do. This kind of mindset often leads them to act in very unusal, and often
un-Christian ways. If they are told to treat so-and-so harshly, ugly or even
hateful, they will do it, thinking they are doing a service to Jehovah in
doing so, for in reality, a command from the WT is taken as a command from
Jehovah himself, and to disobey would considered showing lack of love for
Jehovah. It is not much different from the old church-state systems, where
rulers claimed to rule by divine right.
Something I have found, however, is that almost everyone has at least one
horror story to tell concerning evil things that have happened to them in
their lifetime. This is true because we are still living in the world that
God is permitting Satan to rule over. -- John 14:30; 2 Corinthians 4:4;
Ephesians 2:2; Revelation 12:9.
For those who have been deeply associated with the JWs, and who leave that
organization, or of any similar organization, of course, the focus of their
horror stories is often associated with the organization they have come out
of. Many leave such organizations with a bitter heart, and wish to strike
back at what they perceive to be the source of their hurt. Many continue in
hurt all their lives because they do not give their burden to Yahweh, and
let him take care of it. (Psalm 55:22; Isaiah 50:10; Philippians 4:6,7; 1
Peter 5:5-7) Additionally, the follower of Jesus is told to rise above the
natural tendencies of our sinful flesh, and not to repay evil for evil. --
Proverbs 20:22; Matthew 5:39; Romans 12:17-19; 1 Thessalonians 5:15; 1 Peter
3:8,9.
