considering the shifter just pulls the cable a specific amount, that makes no difference on how well the front DR shifts. The only difference could be the amount of movement to make the shift and the effort involved. The sound of the chain dropping off the larger to the smaller ring doesn't change with a different shift lever. You are a Campy groupy apparently. More and more pros are using Shimano for some reason. You have any idea why?

i know the FD has nothin to do with it... but the "clank sound" is not from the chain, it seems to be common with shimano stuff, nothing bad just noisy. somethin to do with the tension on the cable being released when u shift? there has got to be some ppl here that know what im trying to describe lol.
almost no one in my area uses campy. I think in the tour it was an even amount of teams using campy and shimano. From what i read shimano simply cant keep up with the demand and more and more ppl are going back to campy.

Actually, it does, especially if you have a triple. The Campy front shifter has a greater number of positions, which allows you to better fine tune and get rid of front derailler chain rub. Granted, that's not enough to change an entire group, but one of the highlights of a Campy group, at least for me, is better handling of the front DR.

Having ridden both groups recently, I find that Campy on the front chainring does seem to shift a bit more crisply.

More pros use Shimano because Shimano has the budget to sponsor more teams. Pros don't choose the maker of the frame or the group, that's determined by who sponsors the team.

Yes the Pro are using Shimano because they make great fishing rods and they have big money. Anyone who says shimano is better than Campy Has NEVER owned campy. Campy is champagne, Shimano is cheap Merlot. I dare one person in this forum who has owned both Campy and Shimano to tell me Shimano is better, just one. Btw I switched from Shimano to Campy and I will never look back, its a total no-brainer.

I will agree that to put beautiful Campy on a [censored] bike like a Trek could be a waste though. [censored] ugly bikes deserves fishing rod components and thats why Trek have that big [censored] sticker on them.

I actually agree with 996vtwin... sort of.

Shimano works great, but so does Campy. The main functional differences are the ergonmics of the shifters (people with small hands don't like Campy), but it is really just subjective after that.

I wouldn't call shimano cheap merlot and campy champagne... more like would you rather have a Honda NSX or a Ferrari 430(for the same money). Both are great sports cars (although the NSX is very dated)...but the NSX has no personality and is totally outclassed... it has great reliability and functions flawlessly but it is sterile and stagnant with no personality. Or how about Honda RC51 vs. Aprilia RSV 1000R (Ducatis are total posuer bikes)? Yeah if I am being paid I will take the pig of a bike Honda, but with my own money I would be pretty lame to buy the RC51. Shimano works just fine, but the pros use it because they are paid to.

And yeah Treks and Shimano are like cookies and milk. 😉

i cannot help notice the amount of high end bikes with shimano, and not just recently.

witness the victories of numerous mapei colnago equipped riders.

a guy i ride with has chorus on his trek, his choice. and the legs do the talking...

Campy Ergo front shifters aren't indexed, thats why you can gradually ease the chain down from the big ring to the small one without a clang. (Shimano front shifters don't move quite as freely; they're indexed for each front gear plus a couple of intermediate detent points to deal with extreme chain angles.)

Now to add fuel to the fire... let's talk innovation, shall we? Who came up with the idea of integrated road shift/brake levers in the first place. How about crank interfaces, Campy never quite bothered to go to the effort of improving the crank/BB interface above the square taper of yesteryear? Let alone twice? 😉 Which company had to flee the MTB groupset market with their tail between its legs? But I guess that carbon fibre Record crank looks shiny and impresses the lads at the cafe. After all, who needs engineering when you can stroke your ego instead..

Ahh, all in jest 🙂 I couldn't give a [censored] what anyone uses, as long as you don't shove your choice in groupset down my throat. Champagne, Merlot, blah whatever. After all, I'm just a Cannondale rider with a Shimano groupset and DT Swiss wheels. Not a single Italian component in sight, I must be such an uncultured hack cyclist 😄 :p

Why are you holding back? If you don't like Shimano, why not come out with it instead of beating around the bush.

the way i see it is to ride what u like... i dont care about any pro's or what they ride. im not trying to get a campy/shimano debate goin... i liked the shimano... had some things i disliked about it and then a return spring snapped in the lever and that [censored] me off... shimano is replacing it for free but i dont want to wait weeks for it to come in. i had some money and bought campy shifters, i like them better then the shimano... sure they dident do good with the mountain stuff, but every company makes a unpopular product from time to time.
