First real snowstorm of the year here (real defined as it's staying on
the ground), probably about 2-3 cm. Just enough to make one cautious.
However the temperature was mild (-1C or about -8C with the windchill)
so it was not too bad.

Time to order those studded tires from Finland for the MTB, and put the
road bike into hibernation.... I saw, about an hour ago, just as I was
leaving work, an old duffer on an fully fendered upright bike, pootering
along in the blowing snow. He was actually going at a fair clip.....

That's hardly surprising. One nice thing about biking and walking is that
NOTHING slows you down. (Well, except waiting for traffic. My walk to
school this morning took about two or three minutes longer than usual,
which is (not coincidentally) about the time I spent waiting to cross
streets that normally have a short-enough-to-not-notice wait time.)

I drove this morning, normally it takes 16 minutes, this morning it took
19, although, if I would have taken the bus, it would have been at least
50% longer, then normal, but that's mostly because there are so many
folks afraid of driving in snow. Considering the way some people drive
in it, that is a good thing. Work is too far to walk, it's at the outer
limits of biking range, but I wouldn't have biked today anyway.....
Which means either driving, or getting up half an hour earlier and
taking the bus. If it were a streetcar or subway, I'm there, I actually
like the subway, except an H4 or older, on a hot, humid day (no A/C)....

Yeah, but that's not until Monday (and it's supposed to come along with
rain). 'Round here we're already at -20C with the windchill, and the
pre-windchill temperature is supposed to drop another 3-4 degrees tonight.

Uh, yeah, and the heat isn't working well in the car....

Perfect weather to take the day off work tomorrow to go wander around

the way of a mental health day?).

I almost get one, an almost all day course at work tomorrow... The
requirement is that you show up, kinda appear to pay attention, and then
remember bits and pieces of it, 2 years down the road, when you
actually need to know a small bit of it.....

Jealous? ๐Ÿ™‚ Actually, you'd be surprised. Some of our early morning
mountain bike rides are downright cold (mid to high 20s not THAT far
inland); also plenty of snow in our "East County" areas -- sometimes
    freakin' DEEP!

Still, in San Diego proper it's rare to have temps much below low 40s; and
it only rains on yoga days, anyway ;-)

I've been using them for years. In fact I'm on my second pair of

It's been so cold recently that yesterday I wore socks to bed.

But I still haven't closed my bedroom windows.

I usually wait until mid or late December to close my windows. ๐Ÿ™‚

Masochist. Mind you, my sister and her husband never felt that a
simple -25C was any reason to close the window. I get cold feet at
about +10. Still, it' s not too bad here today. At 11:30 the temp is
    up to a balmy -5C.

I had an apartment where the heat had two settings, off and full blast,
at full blast, just pop the billy on top of the radiator, for a nice
quick cuppa. We had the bedroom window open all year, even when it was
-25C outside it was about 25C inside, and that's with the window open!

Mind you I am the king of layering, I get cold I add a layer, I get
warm, I get rid of a layer.... Easy to do in the Winter, impossible in
summer when it's 30C with a humidex in the mid 40's, you tend to run out
    of removable layers!

Balmy -2 C and heavy snow here. Socks are definately a good idea. In
some cases shutting the window is also a good idea. It keeps one from
    waking up under a drift.

I don't have a beach house and I don't actually live in the West Indies
but I come pretty darn close to it. Tropical island in the South China

During today's group ride I was wearing a bikini with my shorts and
spent a fair bit of time with my shoes off to wading in the ocean while
carrying my bike (the sand was firmer there).

I can't believe that any of the club's leaders are cruel enough to have
deliberately _planned_ for sixty eight people to have a five kilometer
beach walk with most of us on road bikes but at the same time it sure
as heck looks like that is exactly what we did today. I've even got
some lovely purple and green seashells as souveniers.

Since I was going somewhat slower than the rest (I have a bum leg and
walking isn't one of my strong points) I didn't have to do the whole
thing and was instead able to hitch a ride with the bike shop owner on
the fishing boat from which she had just purchased a large percentage
of our lunch. Getting in the boat meant getting wet up to the waist
(yay! for quick drying synthetic bike shorts).

I was very disappointed in the resteraunt we chose to cook our food. I
have no complaints regarding the roast suckling pig, lamb and turnip
hotpot, roasted sugar cane, fried fish, pomelos, oranges, baked purple
sweet potatoes, or beer but, well, except for the beer, we brought it
all with us. All the resteraunt really did was provide tables, chairs,
and fire. There wasn't even _ONE_ hammock to be seen _anywhere_.

Today here was almost up to 0C and we only seem to have about 10 cm of
snow. Riding is a bit messy with a lot of slush on the road. Much more
of your description and those of us facing winter may arrive on mass at
your place. Should we bring our own sleeping bags?

I spend two winters down south and did not miss winter one little bit.

No, I think housing can be arranged fairly easily. But, if you can

We have winter. It just hasn't started yet. Last year there was
almost a week where I was in wool socks, wearing a jacket, and thinking
_real_ hard about not wearing shorts. Also brought a heater into my

What is particularly rough on me is March's rainy season. I tend to

come back to warm and dry. If I weren't visiting winter during
