I guess back then the UCI would take their time banning equipment. Marie won the prologue by 0.01 seconds from Vanderarden who was on a somewhat conventional bike (double disk, 650 front - that's what everyone had). Jalabert and Zulle used that Look bike in the prologue. Back then if you were French you could get away with it (French bike or team or rider), at least in the Tour.

The "Bubble" disk was designed to try and reduce the squirreliness of a front disk. The whole deep section rim thing hadn't been figured out yet (from 1984 till whenever). Campy had a wheel with four big holes punched through it (like a 4 leaf clover).

If you live in or near places where there's dairy farms.. you'll always be supporting local farms. At least in our company our milk - for the whole of the east coast [coz i'm not sure we do the west coast] - is all aussie farms. So regardless of what you buy you're supporting aussie farmers. The production companies may not always be owned by aussies but the milk is still ours and it's important to also support them.

Energy Drinks - So i've got my hot little hands on an energy drink that supposed to be low sugar [.1g per 250ml] and made from vitamins not the guarana and stuff. I've tried them before, a while back and as like most energy drink they're anxiety inducing. However i saw this brand with a caffiene free version too.. so i've tried it and so far so good. Just wondering what people's thoughts are on energy drinks etc and [this might be more of a Q for Ma] but does anyone recognise any issues with the ingredients.. any nasties, or things if too much is ingested it can be uber bad for you etc.

Ingredients: Carbonated Water, L-Glutamine (0.6%), Taurine (0.02%), Natural Flavours, Citric Acid, Natural Flavours, Acesulfame Potassium, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Vitamins (C, Niacinamide, Pantothenic Acid, B6, Folate, B12) Sucralose, Colour (Sunset Yellow).

All I ever use is water, and carry dried fruit and nuts to snack on as well as snakes just in case I need a quick "boost".

If I've been riding in extremely hot conditions and think dehydration might be an issue, then I drink an oral rehydration solution at the end (did this on a couple of days in the 2006 Great Vic Bike Ride). Otherwise, I go for a banana smoothie or chocolate milkshake.

Riding under 2hrs, water. Over two hours, diluted Gatorade or whatever I have lying about, which recently has been Powerbar powder. Keep drinking after you stop riding or you'll wake up with a hangover, minus the fun bit before it.

For food, I've found a muesli type bar that's easy to eat and made from actual food.

In a completely separate vain, this is the coolest thing ever -

When it comes to riding i go with straight water too.. if i ever have an energy drink it's more when i'm flat and can't focus at work. I can't have high or even moderate amounts of sugar coz i get whats simliar to a diabetics "low" [already had all my blood work and thyroid and ALL that checked.. lots and lots, and it's all come back A-OK].. I do have a predisposition to become B12 deficient.. and i know when i was having b12 injections last year i had a bucket load more energy [as well as it keeping me up til all hours of the night for the first day or so after the jab].. so given these drinks have b12.. do you think it might not be so bad?... I'm clueless! :p

As far as 'nasties' goes, it obviously depends how much you have, and for how long, but I'd say that drink is not something you'd wanna live on. The probable nasties in there that I know of are sodium benzoate and sunset yellow (which I think is banned in some countries); and i think the effects of having lots of carbonated stuff ain't good, eeva. I'm not sure about acesulfame potassium or potassium sorbate, so you might wanna Google them.

Generally, it's probably wise to avoid food dyes.

I only drink something 'fancy' on warm days if I ride hard for more than a coulple of hours.

Leave the protein until about 45mins after. It can wait (but not too long). Water first, carbs second (small), protein third. But all within an hour. Then follow up an hour later with proper carb serve. Then a rub and tug. Then off to bed.

Then again I also like to eat salt & vinegar chips and freddo frogs. Isn't Bartos the nutrition God? (edit: ah he posted before me)

The B12 deficiency is the result of your vegetarian diet and not due to an inability to absorb B12? If it is dietary, then just buy some B12 supplements, and take those. If it is an absorption problem, then the bad news is, you need to keep having the injections.

So you're one of those unlucky people who gets reactive hypoglycaemia - In which case you need to do the multiple small meals/snacks throughout the day thing (obviously with moderate to low GI foods) It will avoid the flat and unable to focus problem without sending your blood sugar up and triggering an exaggerated insulin response.

Have you seen a dietician?

I always chuckle when I see this 🙂
