    in fact, im a college undergrad in mechanical engineering, and i have
    roughly one year to graduate. i wonder what courses that i take most
    would be most relevant to the bike industry. i know fluid dynamics is
    one. (i would love to get into the industry!)

    and what would a company like trek look for most in an engineering
    candidate?

    I can easily imagine these bikes never existing, to no detriment of the
    (non-commercial) cycling community.

    They say that the only engineers they're looking for are sales engineers.


    in terms of immediate job requirements, that's probably true, but big
    picture, an understanding of materials seems to be sorely lacking in
    some engineers, so having more schooling in that would give b.d. a
    decisive advantage from what i can see. particularly as the bike
    industry is /so/ dependent on advances in materials these days.

    practical working knowledge in composites would be good to have. i've
    been involved with asme intercollege hpv competitions uptil now in
    where we build our hpv model, and then buy a big roll of carbon fibre
    and glue it with resin all over and leave it to cure. thats how i'm
    starting out right now.

    as far as computing knowledge, i must think that they use a lot of
    pro-e or solidworks, and matlab for mathematics modeling. i'm trying to
    learn as much of these outside the classroom as possible.

    yes, the more modeling experience and competence you can show, the
    better. modeling is already crucial and will only be more so.

    sure, but that's a good thing. if your grades are good and you can
    demonstrate a project of commitment and interest, much like damon
    rinard's home-made c.f. frame, you're in.

    Don't be petty. They hired Damon Rinard. If you review
    his posts here I don't think you'll find a lot of fluff.

    Interesting, over the weekend I was watching The Travel Channels' "Made
    In America" and they gave the host (John something or other, the guy
    from the "cheers" t.v. show) a tour of the factory. And they showed some
    of the steps in building a cf frameset. And other parts of the operation
    as well.

    A guy I know who designed racing bikes at Cannondale had a BS in
    mechanical engineering from Cornell, a lot of expererience racing
    bikes, experience in a bike shop (a two-person shop where he and the
    owner worked with customers and on bike). The owner also built frames
    but I'm not sure if this guy was involved with that.
