First race this year (second race ever after my 2005 DNF).
I think I have built up OK over the last three months: 70, 80, 85 km per month, plus walks, though I'd rather have had one more month of staying at around the 80-90 level. Right now I have some nagging pains - went for an easy hill outing and was OK apart from my left hip flexor. Two days of complete rest might fix that, but I doubt it. It seems like a problem I will have to be more careful about in the future.

Good luck! How far is the race? Is it the same race/course that you DNF last year?
This is a 10k, 1200m mountain race.
Last year was an 8km flat road race, for which my main preparation was weight training and a once or twice weekly hill run for a month. Did I mention that I changed from my usual shoes for the race? 🙂

Yea, good luck to ya! Injuries/sore spots can get stiff with a few days off, so just keep doing gentle stretches. A backbend with the hips forward is a good one for uphill runners - I was even doing that one while waiting in line at the store today. 1200m in 10k is all uphill? (the link isn't working ATM). I might do a pure uphill race someday, but it seems to me most of the fun of a hilly race is running back down the hill!
"...From Homer onwards, Sisyphus was famed as the craftiest of men. He seduced his niece, took his brother's throne and betrayed Zeus's secrets (specifically, Zeus' rape of Aegina, the river god Asopus' daughter; by some accounts, the daughter of his father Aeolus, making her either Sisyphus' sister or half-sister)..."
I like this guy! But yea, something about rolling a boulder up a hill...

Is that like doing deadlifts but stationary?

Weren't you getting curious glances from onlookers?

Yes, all uphill. I wouldn't like to go back down after such a climb. Fortunately, there's a bus.

Do your best! You may only have a case of "runners' hypochondria". ;-) And remember: "Nerves and butterflies are fine -- they're a physical sign that you're mentally ready and eager. You have to get the butterflies to fly in formation, that's the trick." -- Steve Bull
