  1. I'm just getting re-started (actually re-re-re-started) into
    running, and I'm interested in tracking my heart rate,
    distance, etc. I searched in Google groups and found several
    favorable comments on the Timex bodylink system. Their top
    of the line system has the heart monitor, GPS, and the
    device to upload stuff to the PC. Are these pieces also sold
    separately? I thought about getting the heart monitor first,
    then the uploader, then the GPS.

    Thoughts? Thanks in advance for any guidance/advice...

    polar s810i. With the bodylink you can certainly get just a
    minimal system and add the other pieces later.

    The problems with the bodylink are that the data recorder
    doesn't record position, only speed, distance and heart
    rate, and that if you aren't using the recorder, the watch
    only has very minimal heart rate functionality, e.g. it
    doesn't even record max heart rate. Also the GPS is a bit
    bulky, though I find it to be more sensitive than the
    forerunner. The logging software is pathetically minimal.
    With a GPS your speed will vary quite considerably, so pace
    averaging is a better bet. The bodylink only has a whole
    run average pace, whereas the forerunner has both a run
    average and a lap average, the latter is very useful.

    The forerunner doesn't record heart rate. It also seems
    very sensitive to interference, and drops signal a lot. The
    software isn't great but it's sufficient to give you some
    useful summaries of your runs. The big plus is that the
    software is upgradeable, so you get new features like
    interval training, and bug fixes.

    The Polar has the best software, but no distance and speed
    measurement (prior to the s625x). The heart rate
    functionality is advanced as can be. The s810i can record
    every heart beat if you wish.

    At the moment I tend to use the Polar and the forerunner
    together, though I've just got the data recorder for the
    Timex and was considering to use that for certain runs.

    If I were you, I'd consider waiting for some reviews of the
    S625x to come out to see whether that might be worth
    buying. To me, the problem with GPSs is that they're not
    great for relative position changes and accelerometers
    aren't great for absolution positions. Ideally it would be
    preferable to have both, together with a barometer for
    relative altitude changes and a digital compass. I'm not
    holding my breath though...

    Thanks for your info Paul, I was thinking of getting the
    Timex, but I think you've convinced me not to. I'm still
    using my Polar Xtrainer plus, but mainly I just like to
    record my average HR over the session these days. I was
    hoping the Timex would give a course map with elevations and
    good HR functionality, but sounds like it has a long way to
    go. Do either the Timex or the forerunner work in the woods
    with alot of tree cover?

  3. Paul - give good satellite reception do you feel that they
    have the same accuracy. Have you measured the same loop
    with both?

    Btw, that's another negative with the bodylink. The watch is
    only a receive like the data recorder, thus the data
    recorder doesn't know when you've finished a lap. You have
    to sync that data up manually.

    No course map and no elevation, and poor HR
    functionality. Though with the data recorder you'd have a
    log of each HR sample and could thus perform after the
    fact analysis yourself.

    GPSs have poor altitude resolution, here's a log of two laps
    of a park using the forerunner:

    I use the Timex on the trails around Lake Tahoe (6200+ feet
    and lots of pine and fir trees) and experience very little
    signal loss. The weak link of the system is the "recorder",
    which may or may not record and, then, may or may not upload
    to the computer.

    Basic GPSr reporting of altitude is based on having decent
    satellite config to get the 3rd dimension. If you're
    marginal for 2-dimensional position (3 good satellites),
    the 3rd dimension (elevation) (4 good satellites in a
    decent config, not a small cluster or in a line) will be
    similarly off - or worse. Some GPSr's (Etrex Vista,
    probably not Forerunner) have built-in barometric

    more. The accuracy of the gps route on my trails when placed
    over a map is insufficient to determine much in the way of
    elevation change (gps horizontal error may put location at
    bottom of hill instead of on top; also maps aren't that
    accurate) so the altimeter approach is a better
    approximation for me.

    I'd just like to emphasize that the satellite config issue
    is an issue regardless of the type of ground-based gps being
    used. We were chatting about this the other night with the
    tech that uses the survey-grade (1-cm resolution, although
    it might be resource-grade - either way, better than any of
    the hand-helds like we use). They have to pay attention to
    satellite config when planning their work day to get the
    most accurate data also.

    That said, gps systems are more flexible (assuming you've
    got a satellite lock) than accelerometers since you can use
    them skiing, canoeing, snowshoeing, mt biking (no, I still
    haven't gotten around to mounting computer on my bike), etc.

  8. Funny thing happened tonight while I was out doing my
    evening run with my timex bodylink gps+hrm. It started
    raining pretty hard so I powered down the gps and tucked it
    in my camelback pocket - kept using the HRM. It eventually
    stopped raining but remained oppressively humid. I pressed
    the indiglo button and baam - the watch display blanked out
    then reset itself to 1/1/2003 - erasing all data in memory.

    Anyone else have this happen? I'm leaning toward
    attributing it to the environmental conditions, but it
    *was* only my second run. Could I have inadvertently
    pressed a button combination to reset the watch? I've
    crashed many a computer in my day - but a sports watch?
    This is a first.

    I had a similar problem! I was with my brother in his car
    as he wanted to see if his speedometer was accurate by
    comparing with my Timex Bodylink. As it was the evening, I
    was using the light (indiglo) button every 20 seconds or so
    to read the speed from my watch. Suddently the display
    crashed! I don't remember if everything disappeared or
    everything was displayed at the same time but I was unable
    to do anything with my watch. I had to remove the batteries
    and when I put them back, my watch has lost all the data
    and the date and time was changed. Since that time (6
    months ago), it never happened again. In my case, nothing
    to do for sure with the weather. I would think it was more
    related to the indiglo button. By the way, I don't use it
    very often so maybe it could explain why I never got the
    same problem again!

    It's possible, but unlikely as the unit was brand spanking
    new. It was only my second run with the thing. Done a few
    runs (considerably shorter though) with it since then and
    the problem hasn't resurfaced. Tomorrow is another long one,
    so well see what happens.
