I've been wanting to try cycling lately but didnt' want to invest a lot of money in the beginning until I was sure I liked it.
I was lucky to find a Trek 2120 this weekend at a yardsale for $70. It appears to be in good shape. Just needs a cleaning. I tried riding it on Sunday and the front tire made a squelching noise, so I changed the tube thinking it was going flat. I put the new tube in yesterday, and it still makes the same noise.
It sounds like rubber rubbing against metal and making a squelching noise. The tire feels like it fits the rim tight.
Can anyone offer any advice or know what's wrong? Thanks for any help out there. I really want to ride the bike, but I don't want to mess anything up.
Ok, good. Maybe the tire is the wrong size for the rim. Other than that it's hard to say what it might be. Where exactly is the noise coming from? Can you duplicate it by moving the tire with your hand?
I cannot duplicate the noise at all. In fact my driveway is gravel and if I ride it on the gravel it doesn't make the noise, but when I ride it on the asphalt it starts to make the noise. It is a regular noise that happens when a certain spot revolves to the pavement. It's hard to tell exactly the spot its coming from when Im riding it.
Its a Trek 2120 Carbon ZX Series and it currently has Continental Ultra Sport 1000 700x23 tires on it.
I weigh 225, could it be that I weigh too much for this bike?
It only happens on the front tire also. The tires look pretty old, but are in decent shape.
I had a set of Bontrager tires that made a squelch under pressure - hard rides up hills sort of stuff. I thought it was because they were new, but I sold the bike so I never found out if it stopped.
Are the cones loose on the wheel - the movement caused by that could be contributing.
Other than that, rubber dragging across tarmac does have some noise associated with it and squelching could describe it - especially if you move the bike a lot out of the saddle on climbs etc...
