too big for Small Compact frame?

if it feels good, then it's the right size....

I worked out from their website that I could have gone small or medium, but the medium felt better
when I rode it...

If you like compact frames, check out Specialized. They have 5 or 6 sizes. I think most of their
frames are made by Giant anyways.

The top tubes are 53 and 55.5, you can get your proper fit by sizing the components, for compact
frames only worry about the top tube length, that's the only size that concerns you.

they make 3 sizes, BUT...

Speaking to the Avanti rep, here in Melbourne, since Avanti went to compacts, they actually make 8
more frames than when they were making sized frames...

not sure how that works myself, but have heard the same from the Giant rep as well....

Hi, for the sake of accuracy, I believe, at least with their road bikes, they come in a minimum of 4
sizes [S,M,L,XL]. And some models even more [XS,S,M,L,XL] I don't care for this method of sizing,
either. I'm sure for many, it is just fine, but as per some of the other posters examples, if you
are between sizes, not so good. Jeff

Once you determined your "size" requirement, check out chucksbikes.com. They have generic Taiwanese
frames at dirt prices. Make sure you get it to a local bike shop to "prep" the frame before
installing components.

Almost... "if it feels good AND handles well" then it's the right size. I could fit a 6'6" rider on
a 50cm frame, and put him or her in precisely the "perfect position" (that is, the proper alignment
between the saddle, bottom bracket and bars). Of course, doing so would require a horrendously long
and tall stem, and a VERY long seat post - and the result would be a bike that is uncomfortable to
ride, and probably downright dangerous. The same applies to a lesser extent to other "closer" fit

The other missing part of the puzzle when considering compact frames is the head tube length. A
given head tube length will produce a given range of handlebar height range. Cockpit length is very
important, but if the bars can't be set low or high enough, the bike won't "fit". The head tube on a
bike with a horizontal top tube will tend to be by definition "about the right height for most
riders", but the same can't be said for many compact frames.

That's a ridiculous idea. The correct answer is to get a bike with S&S couplers and have a few short
insert lengths made up, just like a dining table leaf.

hmmm, never seen that .. since it'd require 8 couplers to work. but i have seen (as in on the web)
one that converts from a double to a single. a fine idea: a tandem that can not only destroy your
marriage but give you something to ride afterwards. wow!

I just bought a compact Merlin frame..according to their geometry charts I should use a Medium.
Didn't realize they had sent me the small size till I stuck a seatpost in it and figured the reach
so I could order a stem. It seems like the small would work..but it can't can it? A virtual 51.5cm
size and I'm used to a 55cm in a classic geometry. I'd try it but I'm afraid to, going to send it
back today.
