Hi
I live in Barbados and had tkr done locally 8 weeks ago. At this point, I am off the cane except for rough terrain and steps, and everything is going well. I found the operation and rehab was a lot less traumatic than I expected.
This morning I got on my MTB (on a wind trainer) for the first time since surgery and found that I have enough flexion to turn the pedals, but there is some question about whether I am flexing more than the allowed 120 degrees. I will know this later.
For anyone considering tkr I would suggest that you make sure that your quads and hamstrings are as strong as they possibly can be before the operation. I worked hard at this, and my physio says that mine has been the easiest rehab that she has ever done. Also be aware that the physio hurts like hell, but it is essential - don't skip it.
I am 57 years old, and the knee injury was originally from motocross racing and not paying attention to my knee when I hurt it. Back then it was 6 months in a cast and a year of physio (which as any 21-year-old knows is waaaaay too much time to spend off of 2 wheels). If you have knee pain, keeping the thighs strong is a major help - straight leg raises with ankle weights work really well, and can be done without weights to get started without too much pain. Don't forget the 'good' leg as well.
Hope this is useful.
Chris
