Track plotting with GPS Visualizer...

  1. Hello Folks,

    I went an a ramble around south Oxfordshire yesterday, a 34
    km route starting and ending in Nettlebed.

    Having saved my GPS track using GARtrip I exported it in a
    form that GPS Visualizer can read and then plotted it out
    using a 30-metre Landsat image as the background. I then
    grabbed a screen image and did some processing on this using
    Photoshop.

    The results are at:

    hopton.dsl.pipex.comstonor.jpg.

    This was the best I could get, has anyone managed to
    do better?

    to do! Can you talk me through it do you think, slowly and
    carefully, and bearing in mind that I use - albeit not often
    - a 'yellow peril' Garmin eTrex? Oh, and is it possible to
    use very simple language, suitable for one of very little
    brain? Please?

    Better in what way? It really depends what you want exactly.
    As a flat satellite image it's great, but not knowing the
    area it just looks like a random patchwork of fields and
    woods to me. It would make more sense as a conventional map,
    but then of course it wouldn't look so good.

    Then there's the issue of 3D. Having played around with the
    Memory Map demo I'd say that produces much better looking
    results, if of course you want to view a walk in 3D rather
    than a flat aerial view. But 3D can bring it's own problems
    - when walking in very steep terrain, unless you view from a
    fairly high view, parts of the walk may be hidden. Of course
    the higher you go the less 3D it looks, but my preference
    would definitely be for a 3D view.

    Currently I can display my walks in 3D using Anquet Maps,
    but of course they aren't aerial photos. I find that the 3D
    rendering gives a much better impression of a walk, even on
    conventional maps, and a conventional map is much easier to
    understand even if it doesn't look so good. A bit of time
    experimenting with the angle of view and the light shading
    usually produces good results.

    A couple of other points about your walk. Firstly, I can't
    tell where it starts from or in which direction you went.
    That light blue bit sticking out near the top right could be
    your start point, but it could also be a GPS error. I can't
    see any obvious road leading there, but that's one of the
    problems with aerial photos, roads can often be invisible.

    The other thing I find odd is the height colouring of the
    track. This doesn't seem remotely logical to me. My brain
    instictively tells me that the blue and green are low and
    the yellow and magenta are high, which the key tells me is
    wrong, but even after looking at the key I find it hard to
    visualise because the colours seem wrong.

    Most colour systems follow the rainbow colours - blue,
    green, yellow, orange, red. Yours do too, but they seem to
    be in reverse.

    Psychologically blue seems low because it represents the
    sea, green is next up, representing fertile grassland, then
    yellow as you get higher up (mountain grass is often
    yellowish), then brown for the hills, then grey for the
    higher rocky mountains then white for the snow on the top.
    This is the colouring adopted in most atlases (not quite the
    rainbow but close) and I've read that they use those colours
    for pretty much those reasons, even though they don't
    correspond to actual ground colours in some parts of the
    world. Psychologically they seem right.

    Your colouring (I don't know if you can change it) seems to
    use a different logic, the logic of temperature. Red being
    the hottest colour is lowest and the colours get
    progressively colder the higher up you go, which makes sense
    in that it usually gets colder higher up, but it still
    doesn't look right to me. Also the magenta bugs me (I hate
    that colour). Technically I suppose that represents ultra-
    violet and hence is at the end of the spectrum beyond blue,
    but magenta looks closer to red to my eyes, I see it as a
    warm colour rather than a cold one.

    Anyway, it's up to you whether you're happy with the colours
    or not, I just thought I'd share my thoughts on the issue.
    Personally I find that a 3D view gives a much better idea of
    the elevation involved in a walk.

    I'd post an example or two of Anquet and MM 3D but I fear
    that the OS police would chuck me in prison and throw away
    the key... ;-)

    But still, your image does look very nice.

    The eTrex would be fine, I'd guess. So far as I can remember
    <g> the sequence was thus.

    1. Return from ramble and download the recorded track
    from the GPS to the PC, using GARtrip, in my case (but
    I'm sure that Ozi or any number of other programs
    would do as well).

    2. Again, in my case, save the GARtrip track as an Ozi
    *.plt file.

    3. Go to the web site gpsvisualizer.comgpsvisualizer.com and click
    on 'Draw a map'. When the page opens, click on the
    'Browse' button next to the box labelled 'File #1' and
    navigate to the *.plt file.

    4. Under 'general map parameters' select the background map
    to be 'Worldwide: Landsat, 30m (good pseudo-color)'.
    Leave the other options under 'general map parameters' as
    they are for the time being.

    5. Click the 'draw map' button, bottom left. This should
    bring up a new screen showing the track plotted on the
    background map.

    6. Arrange the map on screen so that you can see it all,
    then capture it using 'Shift+PrintScrn'.

    7. Open Photoshop, or your image-processing program of
    choice. Open a new blank document and then type
    'Control+V' to copy the captured image from the clip
    board to the document.

    8. Crop the image to show just the map, then play about with
    the image settings, the contrast, hue, et cetera to
    produce something that looks nice. You can add some
    location labels at this stage, too.

    9. Save the image (I saved mine as a *.jpg).

    That's about it, I think. Once you've got it working you can
    try the different options in GPS Visualizer.

    This all sounds like a gothic procedure, but it's simpler
    that it looks!

    I agree with all of this entirely. GPS Visualizer is the poor-
    man's option, it costs nothing and it's a way of displaying
    tracks on a background without having to worry about
    infringing the sacred copyright of the OS <g>. So it might
    be useful for sharing walks, for example, but you'd still
    need a map.

    fact, a Hopton error, I carried on past the path I should
    have taken and had to retrace my steps.

    In fact I started by the old brick kiln in Nettlebed and
    went round in the anti-clockwise direction.

    Regarding the colouring of the track, there are options in
    Visualizer that I haven't tried yet, but I'm not sure if
    this is something that can be changed. To me, the wonder
    is not that it works in a strange way, but that it works
    at all <g>.

    Roll-on one-metre Landsat imaging. This is supposed to be on
    the way, isn't it?

    You can see where Nick started because that's where the
    track label is (unless he moved it before taking the
    picture). You can't see the direction he went, though,
    unless you set the track to colorize by heading. Then you
    lose the elevation info, of course, but if you're walking
    someplace flat, "colorize by heading" might be useful. (I
    used it to nice effect in a map of a bike tour of Paris.)
    You could also colorize by heading and then do a
    supplemental elevation profile.

    (Another way to tell where you started, finished, took a
    break, etc., would be to mark waypoints along the way and
    plot those along with the track in GPS Visualizer; many
    waypoint formats are supported.)

    You can change which parameter is colorized (altitude,
    speed, heading, slope, etc.), and you can change the
    lightness and saturation of the track colors, but you can't
    change the red-to-purple spectrum. (And I have to say Paul's
    complaints about the non-intuitiveness of the colors are the
    first I've heard.)

    In theory, you might also be able to use the "Copy SVG"
    item in the SVG's contextual ("right-click"😉 menu.
    However, it doesn't always work the way you expect it to
    (depends on the browser and the OS), and it might not
    capture any modifications you've made to the drawing. It's
    worth a try, though.

    And in case anyone is wondering how to do Nick's Step #6 on
    a Mac: Command-Shift-3 takes a picture of the whole screen
    and puts it on your desktop. Command-Shift-Control-4 brings
    up a selection crosshairs and puts the area you select into
    the Clipboard.

    Landsat images are updated as new pictures come in. It would
    be nice, for example, to plot a track now and then again in
    six months' time and look at the differences in, say, the
    pattern of vegetation.

    Yes, that would be nice, but I can almost guarantee that you
    won't get those sorts of timely updates from this particular
    data set. As it is, I think the current data is already 4
    years old (and probably not all of it is from the same month
    anyway), and it apparently takes quite a bit of work -- not
    to mention computing horsepower -- for the guy at NASA to
    get it all set up.

    And even once it IS set up, I suspect there may be some
    calibration issues... Nick, your track looks like it's spot-
    on with respect to the background, but I've seen a couple
    others from the U.K. that don't quite line up perfectly.
    (But if that happens, this is what the "nudger" in GPS
    Visualizer is for!)

    Not a complaint, just an observation. I think you'll find
    that most maps and atlases that use contour shading use a
    sequence along the lines of blue(sea)-green-yellow-brown,
    which I've read fits people's psychologial expectations.
