Tracklogs and track height in 3d views

Have you checked if the altitude information is available in the
downloaded track log? If you saved the track under a name on the vista,
then the altitude information along with the time and several
trackpoints are lost. Only the 'active log' contains time and altitude
information.

Are you sure? On my eMaps the 'Saved Tracklog' loses the
time/datestamps and the number of trackpoints is greatly reduced, but
each trackpoint still has altitude information. I'm surprised to hear
that this is different on the Vista model.

Hmm, now you are making me doubt myself :-) I may be wrong. Currently I
do not have my vista here, so I am unable to test it.

You can download the elevation model from the Tracklogs site independently
from the maps. The address is:

That's great. I got a reply from Tracklogs themselves when I asked
them the same question but I didn't understand this is what they meant.

Delorme's TopoUSA can do 3D map views with GPS tracks and waypoints.
If contour lines aren't sufficient for altitude readings, adding
waypoints with known altitudes would. See sample view:
