  1. Yesterday morning was fine and sunny. It was also day two of Radio One's
Big Weekend. Knowing that we would need to get past the venue to get to
church and expecting traffic to be heavy, we decided that cycling to
church would be a good idea. Consequently, we got the Trailgator out for
    my almost four-year-old daughter.

The journey to church was fine. Without exception, drivers gave us a
wide berth and passengers smiled, waved or stared.

On the way back we had the misfortune to be cut up by an idiot female in
a silver Ford Puma. Conveniently, the next lights stayed red for long
enough for us to catch up. She wound her window down to shout at us that
she "had never seen anything so ridiculous in [her] entire life" and
that we should be wearing helmets. She had to cut us up as there was
nowhere else for her to go (after all, the two empty traffic lanes on my
right and the possibility of waiting ten seconds were not to be
    considered).

It's a great pity: 99% of all who passed us or followed us were
impeccable sharers of the road. Small had a fantastic time, waving and
smiling at others and chatting to people in convertibles at traffic
    lights.

We still intend to cycle to church each week as I can act as outrider,
hovering off Small's rear wheel but the sad consequence of this is that
my wife is now not willing to take the Trailgator to nursery in the city
centre. We are now investigating childback tandems. Thorns look good.

    Cheers,
    Luke

  4. It's really sad that one idiot can ruin what would otherwise be a fun
way to travel. I suppose I have developed a thick skin when it comes
to comments by the ill informed, even though as a parent I am wanting
to 'do the right thing' so am more sensitive to any criticism.

In the long run you have to believe in yourself, and don't let the
    idiots push you around.

Sadly, I never got the daft bat's registration number and it seems a
little rash to take it out on random Puma drivers.

I hold out hope that our commitment to cycling to church each week, a
round trip of around four or five miles, will mean that eventually we
take the Trailgator into town. I know though that Kate right now doesn't
have the confidence to make the trip with Hannah in tow.

The middle seatpost's at the wrong height!

To be honest, I suspect a childback could be just the thing to help me
abandon the car for journeys within Preston.

It might still be worth reporting it - she did something dangerous but gave
you a load of abuse later which is at least as bad. And a child ended up
    getting involved.

As the standard response goes... she might have done the same to other
people who did get the registration number and the police haven't quite got
    enough evidence to prosecute yet.

good one idiot shouldn't put you off. does sound like a nice way to
    travel.

i've allways rather fancied tandems unfortantly i can't see how i'd get
it though bushy parks gates, which would rather limit it's apeal. that
    and where i'd store it!

Don't have a Thorn, but we do have a Dawes Twocan, bought at a good
price from the local bike shop because he hadn't been able to sell it.

DD1 - now 6, loves it. though after I've been out with it towing DD2 in
the Chariot trailer, riding even my hub geared utility bikes feels like
it's flying :-) I had to different bars on the back (an old pair of
drops) as when we got it she was 4 1/2 and the reach to straight bars
was a bit much for her. I'd like to find some child sized toe clips as
    well.

    highly recommended.

The gates are easy. They are big enough to drive a car through so I
can't see why a tandem should cause a problem.

    Storage is another matter.

thats only the road, there are shared paths (to the best of my knowledge
any way) which are much more useful. and some of those gates would be
fairly hard to squeeze a tandem though.

Bushey Park, Sarf West Lunnon? Certainly ridden with a fleet of
tandems in through the gate near Kingston bridge and out <waves hands,
looks at multimap> somewhere near Hampton Hill.
