But - provided there aren't any restrictions in place as to *when* you
can take your bike on the train - that's where bikes are supposed to go
in carriages of that general design, so as not to
obstruct/inconvenience other passengers. So I wouldn't feel guilty
about asking people to budge; I'm sure the guard/conductor would've
thought you did the right thing.

I presume it is also the wheelchair space. So you could ask them if
they thought it cheeky to ask someone to move so you could put a
wheelchair there. Or if you'd ask someone to move off the luggage rack
so you could put your cases there.

The wheelchair space is at the other end of the train on Voyagers.

All the Virgin toytown trains I have been on have had straps ... but I also
take bungee to strap the machine to the wall and stop the swinging around

Unfortunately the train was full so I sat down on the floor near my
bike. I had hung it up by the front wheel. I noticed that when the
train is moving the bike was swinging significantly. This worried me

Could the swinging damage the headset, its not meant to be loaded, in
that direction?

The wheel slot at the bottom means there is only a bit of side to side
swaying which looks worse than it probably is.
