On Saturday the goal was to run 3 miles. At a 60% pace I clocked 2
miles before knee injury-pain set in. I stopped & was thrilled with
this accomplishment & progress...started to walk home.
Don't know why but I turned around and trotted a bit backwards.
Wow!...could not believe it...felt no knee pain in trotting backwards.
I then jogged backwards for about 1/2 mile...and was stunned to not
feel any knee pain at all.
I think I might have stumbled upon something in coping with knee
recovery / rehab & training. Running backwards. I haven't wrapped my
brain around the mechanics, physics, forces, of it quite yet....(in
context with common knee injuries)......but running backwards might be
a way to train (with limited pain) while recovering from typical knee
ailments created from running forward. Don't know, just a theory.
It would be nice to be able to run again by February. If so I am going
to try and race on March 18, Brooklyn 1/2 Marathon. We'll see.

Random; quite [censored] outside m-w and ill, started running short again thurs
after 3 weeks+ -- felt ok but way out of running shape. Snow too far away to
x-ski for now, though maybe next weekend. Warm today, loved the bike; people
coming out of the woodwork on balmy days. Goal is to get light, get running
fit, do random trails and blast the escarpment trail run next summer. One
solid running goal is enough, no more ultras desired as of now, or save it
for unofficial backcountry ones...

Good to hear, Karen! I hope you have a great half in two weeks.
It's my favorite distance to race. I love the tension that pace seems
to create.

After 5 weeks at over 95km on average, I had a sick week.
No energy or appetite = ineffective training. I am just sort of
getting over it now, but I lost a couple pounds and I'm a bit
dehydrated.

My family had a golden cocker spaniel in the 70's, and my dad would
take it out for his daily run (5 miles or so, 8mpm pace). It loved running
more than anything but is not really a breed suited for that type of thing,
of course. As a result it developed arthritis by the age of 9 or 10 and
could not run anymore. I remember my dad having to sneak out the
back so as to not upset the dog. We had to get it put down a year or
two later because it was in a lot of pain that was worsening. Still, I
vividly remember how much he loved to run!

We've got a border collie-lab-something-something mix. Basically a hippo's
body with goat legs. I'll take her for a 1-mile warmup, then drop her off
at my house and continue on my run. Like most dogs she likes to stop and
smell the roses (or something). I won't stop for anything short of a train
crossing, otherwise I'd probably lengthen her runs.
