transfering SPD cleats to different shoes

You probably could do it, but I doubt the boots will have the sole stiffness to work well as cycling
shoes. The cleats may pull out of the boot sole in a short time as well.

Take the old bicycle shoes and your hiking boots to the local shoemaker if you can find one. I have
a good one here but that doesn't help you. You need the support sole in the bicycle shoe to make
this work. A reasonable shoemaker can extract the stiff soles and install them in your boots and
glue their boot sole-with-a-hole back in place. Shoemakers have amazing glues. Just don't breathe
that stuff for long.

And you can also try triathelon transition pedals with straps and some velcro on the boots. This is
a bit pricey but a couple years ago Tony Torti on the Winter Cycling List (see Icebike website) said
he was getting good results. Basically the cleat goes on the transition pedal and your boot is
strapped into the transition pedal which is just acting as cleat mounting hardware.

I bought the transition pedals and straps but found my feet warm enough with oversize Sidi Storms
with heavy wool socks and several layers of neoprene toe/shoe covers and booties. I still haven't
got around to testing them and this winter's looking too warm so far.

I also switched to Eggbeaters at about that time and maybe that makes it s tiny bit warmer
than SPDs.

Gary, please let us know what you find & how it turns out. I have a pair of bike shoes that don't
fit well and a winter pair of hiking boots...
