looking for some completely smooth mtb slicks with a width of 1.5. any ideas, i've looked at Vredestein S-Licks and Armadillo Nimbus having done a quick google search but i'd like something with an even less discernable tread. any suggestions please?

I believe there are rules of marketing that prohibit completely slick tires in 26". The IRC Metro in that width is treadless for all practical purposes.

I think i'll try the Michelin XCR route, they look to be the cloest to what i had imagined although i dont understand the difference, other than colour, between XC and XCR?.

I really like the Performance house brand atb slicks. They are completely slick, roll great, and a super value.

The XCR has Kevlar rather than steel wire beads, and a finer fabric in the carcass. That makes it lighter and more expensive. I don't know if the rubber compounds differ.
The Schwalbe Marathon Slick also comes close to fitting your description, though not quite as close as the Michelins.

However, at $8.50 per tire, the performance tire is the *best buy.*
Oh, I just love the Avocets as well, but the pricing puts me off. I remember the first set I saw--some enormous 26"x2.0" Fasgrips on a mtb back in the 80s. I thought they looked like clown tires. :-P The mtb version looks much more sober in the current all black regalia.

The house-brand slicks from Performance have very little tread formation, and I've had good results with them. They're also inexpensive.
