Hello,
I'm looking to buy an exercise machine (treadmill or elliptical) for a
couple (relatives) who live in the NE, where the weather is relatively
miserable for an extended period of time and am considering a treadmill
or an elliptical machine. They have expressed interest in getting a
machine, but it really is outside of their means. This would be a
gift.
The profile is that they are each ~240lbs and would like to use the
device along with diet to lose approximately 50lbs each with the goal
to be able to eventually jog...which, for the purposes of this post
means that they would like something to be relatively durable enough to
eventually handle light jogging. I expect the use to be approximately
1 hour per day (combined time of all participants).
Cost is a concern, but I would like experienced advice on particular
machines or expectations, so that I can try to balance the cost with
something that would meet sound durability requirements. This can
include to mean that I buy one type of machine now and then they
upgrade in the future if they continue to use it and/or they require a
more durable machine (I'm open to options).
For example, I read that the Smooth 6.25 is a relatively durable (able
to to handle running) treadmill for roughly $1500 (delivered). But I
have not read many reviews on the Smooth line of products (I've read
some good reviews, but am concerned because they only sell direct so I
cannot try it before I buy it). I have read about "buying a treadmill"
and believe that I have some understanding of what to look for
regarding the motor, rollers, programs and options, etc. The
information on ellipticals seems to be relatively sparse by comparison.
I'd like to ask...
- What features would be "must haves" and which would be considered
"bells" for a basic, durable elliptical?
- Would the difference in "impact" on the knees be significantly
different between an elliptical and a treadmill in their beginning
work, given that they would primarily be walking and/or walking briskly
for the immediate use of the machine?
- I believe that I'm looking at about $1000 to $1500 for a treadmill,
since I'm not sure of the "must have" features of an elliptical, should
I expect to pay in the range of more/less/equal?
- For treadmills, do you have any experience with the Smooth line of
products and/or specifically the Smooth model 6.25
(http://www.smoothfitness.com/products/smooth_625-t-pct.htm?pct=pct.htm)?
- Are the any pros/cons that you would provide with a previous
purchase?
They intend to use this primarily in the long winters up north, but
would opt to either walk/jog outside when the weather is better.
Should that be a determining factor, given the differences in the types
of workouts the treadmills and ellipticals provide...they could get one
type on an elliptical and another by outdoor activity?
Thank you.
