Trek or Specialized?

while i've always leaned to the american made product...i recently started riding specialized after attending one of their product classes. the bike is top of the line no doubt. boonen and bettini will continue to prove that as well as the full quick step, and gerolsteiner team in 07. they really do the full job in making a bad ass bike, and components/accessories. they usually have better prices as well. also having dealt with both of their warranty dept. i can specialized is way better!

Bicycling's reccommendation means next to nothing. But it does feel good having a bike reccommended by a seeming authority... I've heard good things about the 1000, but I've also ridden an Allez for a few hundred miles and had no complaints. Sorry if my 2 cents sucks. Don't think either one would be a bad choice.

Although I've never owned a Specialized, I've never had any problems w/ my Trek (granted I ride off-road)

I think the Trek 1000 is a great bike to start with, it's an excellent bike for the price. My first road bike was a 2001 Trek 1000 and I rode that bike for 6 years on and off. I don't know much about specilized bikes, but the best thing I could tell you is to test ride them both and go with the one that you like the best.

Both are American companies and of course use imported components and some of the frames are made elsewhere. Although you may find some small variations in geometry in the frames all thing being equal such as components,tires,saddle etc. I would pick the one with the best color scheme.
In other words I think the frames are very similar.

What would yoiu guys reccomend I get, Bicycling magazine said the Trek was the best entry level bike, so now I'm leaning towards that. I wanna see your guys' opinions.

I've had a Trek 1000 for six years, good entry level but its a bit heavy. However, considering I ride up to London on pot-holed roads each day if its reliability you want go for it. Make sure you change your gear cable before they fully go otherwise like me you end up having to fork out for a whole new set of shifters!!
