Ultegra 9 to 10 speed

You don't mention what you have now versus what you would have to
change to. Why don't you just get the 12-27 first and see how that
feels? Front shifting without the Shimano spec'd rings could be iffy
with STI. If you have Ultegra shifters now you don't need to change
the shifters to switch from a double to a triple. Instead of using a
triple try a compact crank instead. You would get better shifting and
would only need to change the cranks and the cassette.

I agree with the idea of getting a compact double. With a 34-50 double up
front and a 12-27 rear you can climb just about any of the hills in the
Santa Cruz mountains.

I have a compact and like the setup. Be careful about the front derailleur.
The standard one will work in most case but is less than ideal. You might
have problems getting the cage low enough on some frames with a brazeon
mount. Also a compact specific derailleur like IRD or Campy may shift
better. I have a Campy and I don't get any chain drop like others have
reported with the standard front derailleur. I had to grind off metal on my
derailleur pivots so that the cage would clear the chain when using the
biggest cog on the cassette.

Great, that is what I was hoping. Would a 9 speed chain damage the 10
speed chain rings or should I swap with my 9 speed chain rings?

Keep the 10s rings, no damage from a 9s chain...
