  1. Hello all!

I have a one year old who like getting out of bed at 5am. So at the moment I
am doing most of my training on the mag trainer.

2 nights ago, the surface of the mag trainer looked damaged after the ride.

So I moved it along a bit so I was now riding on a fresh surface. But
tonight, the tyre melted!!!! Yep, big chunks of the tyre came off!

Has anyone else had this happen??? How much heat is generated by a mag
    trainer???

What can I do to stop it? I cant be buying new tyres every second ride!

    Paul

Not enough pressure on the roller (or too much, but you would surely
    notice that).

    Tyre wasn't a "slick".

You should also clean any rubber off the roller.

Welcome to the wonderful world of tyre versus rim drive. I've been
using a tyre drive mag trainer for a while and the only tyre I've
"lost" prematurely was due to insufficient pressure on the roller which
led to very rapid and destructive heat build up (put your hand on a
spinning tyre and see how hot it gets :-) )

I wish I had a rim drive though, no one seems to complain about them....

In my experience, they break, they slip, they don't last. IMO you
    don't want one.

I generally recommend getting an old clunker wheel (the heavier the
better - it's a flywheel) and a heavy duty clunker tyre and using that
on ar trainer, and make sure there's enough pressure to stop the tyre
slipping. It's usually tyre slip that causes overheating, as you point
    out correctly 🙂

I bought one about a year ago (there's about 9mnths of dust on it
🙂 ).When you attach the bike, you release the roller and it
springs agains the tyre. That way the only variable is tyre
pressure. I thought all of them had this spring mechanism!?

I've had a Minoura rim trainer for over three years with sometimes regular and sometimes irregular use, all without incident. It does slip a little under high loads (>40km/h), but I don't do hard sessions on the trainer anyway.

It also doubles as a truing stand...

Yeh I hammered the sh1t out of my minoura rim drive trainer this winter and its good as gold and i dont need to bother with another wheel or tyre....

I had a rim drive which I used without hassle for 2 years. I sold it (stopped riding for a few years) to a *triathlete* who managed to destroy it in one year.

I've had one for a few years that gets occasional use without any dramas. And it's not okay Bleve, we want an argument dammit! 🙂

Oh, I'm sorry, this is abuse. You want room 12A, just along the
    corridor.

I destroyed the plastic+rubber roller on my Minoura rim trainer in the first week. The shop replaced it and I used this for some time after. In fact, it's in storage in Mildura if anyone wants to use (or post it to me 😉).

You can buy special low-heat (um?) tyres to use with tyre trainers. I might consider going to a tyre one because the fluid (not mag) trainers seem to be mostly tyre based. Who am I kidding.. training?! huh?! Bleve - I'll get on the case, promise, but I don't even have a computer now and my HRM vanished :S

Same story here. My wife (great cook, bad mechanic) also uses the trainer and its no problem for her to remove my bike from the trainer and put her bike on. There is no way she would be swapping wheels etc for tyre drive. My justification for the extra money for rim drive was that we would not have to clean little piles of rubber off the carpet as in tyre drive. 2 more votes for rim drive.

PS. Not riding due to illness. With a very lot of luck I might get back in 6 months or so but may have to go bent!

Damn good to see/read that you're posting stuff again, the last month or so I've been sincerely hoping things would improving for you. 😉

Back problems? Or general debilitation including balance?

Of course I think everyone should go bent, but I'd prefer they did it
cos they had seen the light rather than because they can't ride what
    they prefer! 🙂

Here's hoping you feel lots better and go bent anyway.

ditto...well get better, as for bent... I'll leave that alone

    On call alas.

When tape silos sit there gibbering, they ring me to tell them "call

Many thanks for the thoughts and get well wishes. It is friends and faith that will get me through this trial.

I can assure everyone that chemotherapy is not a good substitute for a 100km+ Sunday Bunch Ride.

Was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer in early December. Have had 2 lots of chemo (first on 58th birthday! ) and am feeling quite well, by comparison, atm. Very weak and slow but pain has decreased greatly in last 3 days. Med staff say that my fitness and condition are a huge advantage to getting a reasonable lifestyle back. The average patient they see hasnt got much of a chance. (smokes, grog, fat, lazy)

Zeebee, the cancer has weakend a couple of ribs, right shoulder and my spine between the shoulder blades so a DF bike would put a lot of strain on a very weakened upper body. We will see. Looking for 2nd hand GS bent trike, I am 190cm -90kg
My target for 2006 was to ride 10,000km in the year. Got to 8,600. My aim for 2007 is to ride 1,000km.

21st Jan is first review day, scans & tests & news of progress then 3rd chemo.

I am keeping a positive attitude and with the help from my friends in the way of thoughts, get well wishes and prayers I will be back on the road soon.

Thought I was overtrained, over tired, got a chest cold that wouldnt go away then minor pneumonia that wouldnt respond to antibods, then the words "you have advanced lung cancer" - 16 weeks.

    Cheers

http://www.ozhpv.org.au/forsale.htm might be of use. Tall can be a bit
of a problem for some bents, but I think most trikes cope.

I agree a trike is better than a bike for you as the learning curve is
way easier and without having to worry about balance you can cope more
    easily with tiredness.

I hope you can find one soon. If there's one in Sydney that's suitable
let me know - I can have an eyeball and help to send it.

Well doesn't that put most of our so-called problems into perspective? 🙂 Damn good to read you're rallying hard against this appalling illness, and you will be considering those Sunday Brunch Rides again!

For bents, trikes etc, may I suggest Ben at Trisled. Also Ben has substantial experience in designing & building custom frames, and he comes highly recommended, not just because he's a friend, but he *will* listen to what your personal requirements are, instead of simply trying to sell stuff. Have a gander at some of his models:

Chin up mate, fight hard and please keep posting updates! 😉
