  4. I say go for the wooden poles. Make a sheild so you don't die and get a
sword for close combat, then get a video camera so we can watch.

Be sure to make that videocamera high up on the priority list.

  6. A couple of years ago, while working at a renaissance faire, I used
wooden poles, with boxing gloves wrapped around the tips. Also, had
small shields. It worked fairly well, I would say. Here's a picture
of the poles with the gloves, not a joust action shot - never found a
great one of those, but just for an idea of the poles.

  7. Would it work if you tried shoving a broomstick into a pool noodle and
used another noodle make a blob at the front?

  8. As Gild suggested, in the Memphis Unicycle Club and St. George's
(School) Unicycle Club we use wooden handles inside a pool noodle. I
put duct tape (red) on the ends to protect the noodle. The kids love
it and even come to the 6:00 a.m. practices just to joust. My
challenge as a director is that the kids tend to want to use these
weapons as clubs and not jousting tools. They have broken the joust
but, luckily, nobody has been hurt. It is a perfect way to wake up the
    middle school kids!

I'm currently on a quest to find the perfect shield that, too, will not
be used as an offensive weapon and will not hurt the gym floor. A
plastic garbage can lid would work but the only garbage cans lids that
I've been able to find have the handles on the sides and not in the
middle. The galvanized lids are A) too expensive, B) too heavy, and C)
    too dangerous.

I once replaced a plastic garbage can's handle by punching two holes in
the can and running a piece of rope which had a piece of rubber hose
slid over it through the holes. It's lasted about 10 years now. Ought
two be able to run two of these through a garbage lid to make upper and
lower handles. Or maybe you could even cut a couple of slits in the
lid and use strips of velcro fasteners for handles. That way they'd be
adjustable for all arm sizes. Hmmm.....

  12. pvc pipe, covered in that spongy foam stuff, and wrapped in duct tape.
you can even hit each other with it, and it doesn't hurt!!

How do you cut the hole down the middle of the noodle to slide the
    stick in?
Or do you just push the stick in and let it make it's own hole as it
    goes?
