    Hi

    Im in a bit of a fix...

    My bike is an aging Burgundy Saracen Backtrax with:-
    Tioga Handle Bars
    SR Sunstor Suspension Forks, 90 Magnesium.
    Sharmano Decore HB M510 Viam Front Wheel.
    Zac 2000, rigida, with 7 gear cassette, Back Wheel.
    Light Bike, Long black seat pole.

    Items I have bought (Currently boxed new) ready to be fitted from eBay bike “shops” in the last few months.
    Shimano Decore XT rear V Brake, BR-M760
    Shimano Decore XT front V Brake, BR-M760
    Shimano Decore XT front derailleur, FD-M760 with SM-AD16 Clamp Band Adapter.
    Shimano Decore Hollowtech Octalink, FC-M530
    Shimano BB-ES51, Bottom Bracket.
    Shimano Hyperglide Chain, CN-HG90.

    Parts I need to get.
    Shimano XT? Back derailleur.
    Shimano XT Brake lever’s front & back. (ST-M760 is recommended by the break document).
    Shimano XT front/back gear changer.
    (Maybe in one dual XT gear/brake lever?)
    Shimano XT gear + brake cables.
    Bike Computer.
    Hand Grips.
    New Slick Road Tires, New Inner tubes etc.

    My bike is soild, with its large seat pole and all the parts its great for both on road with slick tyres, and off road even with teh slick tyres.

    Im going to get good parts and then in the future upgrade the frame.

    What is a a good strong but light hard tail moutain bike frame.. I saw this on ebay its a beautull frame to look at, are all bikes v-brake compatable?

    If you had my bike and wanted to upgrade to some thing new light and cool what would you go for.

    -Maybe carbon fiber, aluminum
    -Size for 6foot2inch.
    -Mainly tarmac, maybe some off orad a little.
    -Strong, most parts got already.

    Sounds as though you are planning on having one nice bike.

    I don't know a lot about mountainbikes, but if you're not going to use it exclusively "in the mountains" it might be a good idea to go with a hardtail frame.

    I have a hardtail GT and it's good for around town and taking off road now and then.

    But, I'm sure you'll getter better advice from a pure bred MTBer.

    there may be a section somewhere just for MTB riders in this forum.

    You got some nice gear there! It looks like you need to stick with the 7 speed rear end for a while as your frame will be 130mm between the rear dropouts. When you put the new cranks and chain on you may need a new 7sp rear cassette as the chain may slip.
    Any nice alloy brake lever will give good results with XT brakes, so you can choose something that catches your eye or fits your hand/wallet. I never liked the shimano shifter/lever combinations, except on the roadbike.
    There are so many hardtail frames around now but bang for buck nothing beats aluminium frames, just watch out not all new frames have V brake bosses, some are disc only.

    Hi

    thank you all so much for replying.

    I agree a hardtail frame would be best.

    Just gettting the bike back on the road is what i am looking forward to and getting some regular exercise.

    Question, A lot of the xt gear derailers are for 8 gears, can they work on the 7 gears I have on the rear cassette, that was a good idea to change the rear cassette when fitting all the new bits.

    Should I maybe get a 8 gear rear cassette, I have not bought a rear derailer yet even.

    An 8 speed deraileur will work 7sp with 7sp shift levers.

    An 8sp cassette will not fit your frame. You could get a 24-11t cassette in 7sp if you don't have any steep hills to ride, this would give you the closer ratios of an 8sp.
