urgent chain help please

SRAM PC48/PC58.

If you _really_ want shimano (and I can think of absolutely no good reason
for doing so), CN-HG50 is the sora chain, and HG-70 and HG-90 are the posher
ones for 7/8sp.

9sp appear to be HG-x3.

The Taya chains that Halfords sells are marked according to speed. is that
the one you bought?

Yes it said 7-8 speed Sora compatible (orange box), but the links bulge
out too much;

the cassette is one of these (but 13-26, off ebay as they seem to be
discontinued now)

Cycle Surgery in Selfridges or maybe Decathlon; I need the bike
Saturday. Will get 70 if not much more.

OTOH one of the main disadvantages of the shimano, viz the crappy
replacement pin idea, can AFAIK be alleviated by the use of one of the fancy
links - so there's a thought.

the new cassette has a larger granny ring so I will need to keep the
chain longer following Sheldon's formula; will I be ok on the very
bottom gear as long as there is still sufficient chain tension to stop
the top jockey wheel clattering against the cassette? (could do with a
new mech anyway so may buy a long cage one if need be)

I'd suck it and see. The bit I'd be worried about is the mech not having
sufficient vertical movement to clear the sprocket. The cage length/chain
length thing merely means with a longer cage you have more usable gears - if
your chain is a bit long, it'll just mean you'll lose some of the
small/small combinations.

26 will almost certainly be fine. 25 is a pretty normal big cog, so 26 isn't
pushing it at all. 32 or 34 is a different matter :-)

I hope so; will find out tomorrow; fitted it last night and in my rush
to get out to the club night (before last orders) I put it back
together with a chain tool forgetting the special link, and now I can't
find where I joined it. Oh well, will take the quick link tomorrow.
Still a bit of clattering, I think the rear mech is a bit bent from my
pre-Xmas icy tumble (the gear hanger took the brunt of it, and my leg)
but it should be OK for the moment.
