You get more than what you pay for, 'cos it's free. They even filter out
some of the spam. Allegedly there are restrictions on certain swearwords,
but that appears to be bollocks, though others have used stronger words to
disprove that rumour.

If you have an ISP they'll have a free newserver too.

Yep, as Mark says, there is no need to pay if you just want access to
text groups. You can get a free account from these people:

http://www.individual.net/

They have been around for ages, and have an excellent reputation.
Email them and they'll set up an account for you and mail you back log
in details.

If you want a news service provider for binary groups, then the
current best option is http://www.giganews.com/, but they are a bit
pricey for unlimited accounts ($25 US a month). A better deal would
be http://www.newshosting.com/, who will do you an all you can eat
monthly account for $15 US a month.

I'm currently with Astraweb, who also do unlimited accounts at the
same price, but their service has dipped rather dramatically just
lately and I'm about to jump ship.

You appear to be using BTOpenworld or BTsomethingorother as your ISP -
You are already paying for their news-service, although it is often
criticised for being rather a poor/unreliable service.

I pay just £7 per year with Claranet (Clara News service)

Thats an infinite percent more than I pay for news.individual.net, which I
heartily endorse as per the other posters.Though it doenst do binary...dunno
about clara, I would guess not?

Thanks, yes, that's why I don't want to use their news server.

Google groups - great for searching archives, but not much use for rapid access since updates seem to be delayed 6 or more hours.

I use Agent Premium Newsgroups, $14.75 US per month unlimited, which is
Supernews rebadged.

Clara do offer Binary accounts, but not for that price. Problem with
Clara binary is the retention is so low, down at about 3 days, which
makes it a very badly crippled service. Particularly when you consider
that the US providers offer weeks of retention at faster speeds than
Clara, on an all you can eat basis for about 8 quid a month. Bargain.

groups 2 beta?
