  1. Hi everyone. Simple question for those in the know. How do I remove the
valve cores on our tyres. We have need to remove them to put in some
    "slime". Inner tube sealant.

    Thanks

If you have valves with car-type valves, these are called Schrader valves.
You use a valve cap with a little tool on the end to unscrew the valve
core. I've seen them on some bike inner tubes, and on cars.
Ask in a car parts store for a 'valve lifter' cap.
The tool is simply a little slot which fits over the bar at the top of the
    valve core.

I tried a slime-filled inner tube myself once, wasn't that impressed.
hope you have a better experience.

  3. Hi John.
We dont have the car type valves. Think they might be called presta ?
valves. Have undone the valve, the same way as I would to inflate the tyre.
The core, with a little brass knurrled nut is released, but wont come off.

    any ideas

  4. Hi again John.
Have just spoke with St John's Cycles. Seemingly you cant put the sealant in
presta valve tyres. Wish they had put that bit of info on the can.

    Anyone want some slime ?

Apparently, some people make a hole in the tube, squirt some in then patch
tube!! I don't know how wise that is.

I think some (unusual) inner tubes come with replaceable presta valve
cores, perhaps that's an option. Another is to get tubes that are
    prefilled with sealant.

Personally, I think it's better just to use good tyres with normal tubes,
watch out for glass, and don't get flustered when you get the occasional
puncture -- just fix it and get on with it.

I was impressed, having taken slime filled tyres on a very thorny cycle
route, shortly after hedge cutting time. The slime was green, and I
think the tubes in question came with it pre-installed. They were
presta. I expect theres variation between different makes of slime, and
different kinds of punctures. These thorns got through high quality
tyres, which probably reduced the puncture size to some extent on those
    that got through.

I don't want to test the theory on my spare Presta tube, but looking
closely at the valve end, the bit that the dust cap screws to has flats
on it that look like a very small spanner or pliers would unscrew it.
Its a larger pitch thread on the very end of the valve stem.

I found slime to be awful stuff. Overnight it pools in the bottom of
the tube and makes handling very strange.

I agree with Pete: Use good quality stuff and ride carefuly.

If you still need to patch your tube, why bother with slime? 😉

I have had the core of a presta valve come unscrewed a couple of times
in what sounds like the way you describe. I have always discarded the
tubes as I didn't feel confident in the valve integrity but icbw

That should work although it's a lot of faff, especially when you
think Slime will be bought by people who don't want to be patching
    tubes.

I believe Halfords sell pre-Slimed tubes with presta valves.

It can be done - it's a PITA - I tried it on a wet quiet day in
    January.

2 hours work is not terribly cost effective when tubes cost xxp :-((
