  2. 30 inch seat-in sidehop? Guy's wasting his time on a uni. He should be
hooping it up in the NBA.

I'll see that to believe it.

ohhh, that could be. Except the title of this thread is 'vertical jump.'

  5. This is Zack Baldwin shoutin' out to all you peeps who can't hop very
    high.

I have devellopped a new flexibility in my knees that they actually can
bend foreward. It looks really weird, and hurts really bad, but it lets
    me hop wicked high!

No thanks. I don't want a "new flexibility" in my knees if it looks
really weird, hurts really bad and on top of that, lets me take on a
    new identity.

    Take care!

  9. Hey,

I've never really have given much thought to hopping high before. I
remember back in 2001 when I saw Kris Holm's huge record breaking hops
on his photo site. I was riding a 24" Miyata back then (which I used
good technique, and rode it for a few years until I bent the wheel and
the cranks). I hadn't tried too much stuff on it. But my neigbor whom
learned to ride the same time I did (we both coached each other) grew
jealous pretty fast when I was nailing 17" hops on that old, rickety
thing, never intended for trials or muni--I was nailing those pretty
    early on in my riding.

Michigan sucks for riding, unless you have an indoor spot to go to
during the winter. Plus, where I'm from the towns are small, and the
urban riding is pretty limited as to the shape, selection, and distance
between places with stuff to try--because skateboarders/bmxers get
driven out of some spots really quick. I didn't think I was good enough
to go into town (I live a mile out) and try my luck at learning tricks
(wearing no protective gear, which is what I've always done), while
possibly dodging the cops. I never figured on trying until I ordered my
new, decked-out Kris Holm Pro uni (yes profile, alex, thompson, jc
odyssey pedals, you name it), to where I wouldn't have to worry about
    wrecking my unicycle anymore.

Before I ordered my new uni (which I did back in the last weeks of
August '04), I lost the passion of riding after what I'd done to my
Miyata. So I gave it up for about 5 months.

Then I came on this board again when I got my new uni, and lots of
things had changed, or at least I thought, because now I knew how Kris
was getting that high on his uni, and I began trying to do it.

Since I'm at college, I got adapted to the urban riding on my 19" pretty
well. Having such a bomb-proof and different sized uni was a bit of an
adjustment. The large tire didn't help at first, until I understood the
timing and compressing of it to get hops. I haven't had too much time
to be out, so I'd ride at night, when the campus was quiet. I think I'm
way better in the day (at least my judgement, and risk-taking facters
    are better).

I figure I should by some protective gear really soon, because spring is
now hear. I'm getting my skills back (for what I couldn't practice in
    my small dorm room).

Why am I droning on, and on? I'm psyched! I've been trying pre-hops
just static on a flat surface with not much luck. It has felt like I've
been fused with the uni when trying to do 'em. I kept thinking "wow,
there's no way I'll get in the 30's." Depending on what kind of day I'm
having, I think I can stick my rolling and sidehops in the 20's. I just
get psyched to try my luck without pads, in a dark urban environment.

About a week back I started playing with something. And whomever said
it, you're right. No matter how many vids you watch, you have to figure
out the tuck on your own. For some reason, I was hopping about my room
(working on standstills and removing recovery hops--which I'll make
myself do a whole line over again until I nail it the right way),
watching the tv, and then I just thought, 'maybe if I try to use my
legs, because there's just no way that my arm alone is going to get my
uni 30" into the air.' I remembered back to my bmx days and how I'd
hook my feet onto the pedals using my feet to pull the back half of the
bike up. So, I thought about it, and kept telling my mind to do that.

I tried it, and...BAM the uni swooped up. I lost my footing on the
pedals because the uni came up so fast and so easy. I tried again and I
felt the tire hit my butt! I came down, and when I did, I slipped off
the uni. So I've been worried about getting leg armor ever since.

Have I tapped the 'spring' you all refer to? I'm sloppy at it right
now, but I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing.

Any way I can hone my technique so that I can combine this with a
    prehop?

  11. Good writeup.

I put a video up in my gallery of a hop onto a rock I did on my muni
yesterday (trials on bernal hill, 28" muni hop). I did a frame by frame,
and it shows, pretty clearly, what one's tuck should look like on high
hops. One thing about what you're describing is that it'll lead you to
jump forward because it will bring the tire so far behind your center of
balance. But if the tire hits your butt, then that's good enough, and
you'll tunre it to be forward better in time by yourself.

As for prehops, yes, but use them to get onto objects. Everyone jumps
higher when there's a ledge as penalty for failure. Once your tire has
left the ground, the difference between a prehop/no prehop jump is very
    small.

  13. In the videos I've seen on big hops, it seems that I'm doing something
right. I think what I need to do now is incorporate it into my hopping
onto things, instead of just flat/static surfaces. I liked your video
too, and I'm seeing the same thing. I think you're right in that I need
to do some tuning. Sadly, I've only tried hopping like this less than a
dozen times. The uni pops up so quick...I would've never thought to let
my legs do some of the work. Previously when hopping things, I've
always judged a bench or ledge, for example, that I'm going to hop on,
by how far sideways I'll have to lean, and how hard I'll have to pull up
on the seat. It just occured to me that in that process my legs are
really just dead weight, and my arm has to pull the uni and my legs
up...that only gets one so high off the ground.

The only forward motion I've seen, is me thinking about getting the seat
post to be rather level with the ground, and keeping the seat in front
of me so that I can suck the uni up. I do acknowledge that once I'm in
a landing position, my seat will be in a different direction, more above
me, and pointint up, so that I may get my bearings back, and continue
    the line.

Well see what happens! And maybe my observations could help people out
in the future once my technique improves.
