have any of you had such wheels? what tools were required to work on them? were they reliable?

I have a set on My 2001 Trek 1000. They came on the bike stock. Vuelta Airline. Held up very well over the years. No broken spokes and just some minor truing. These wheels only require cone wrenches to adjust and remove the cones for grease packing. The rubber seals can be rolled back carefully if you want to apply grease without taking them apart. I am not sure if their current line up are the same.

They have good and wheels and not so great wheels, and they've been known for having stellar wheels. As per usual, the money spent on Vuelta wheels could easily buy a more durable set of custom built wheels. That's what I would do if I were going to be hauling heavy loads on a bike.
