Wasabi and regular horseradish are very different. That's how I got
burned on two other brands. They tried to make green horseradish with
mustard in it, and marketed it as wasabi, which I think should be
illegal.

I'm gonna go open that little tube now, I'm getting a little forehead
sweat just thinking about it. :-)

After reading this, I just get the 'natural' wasabi, it's what everyone that I
make sushi knows about (myself included). It's pretty strong, so test it out.
I tried to warn someone who was making sushi and he didn't believe me so I let
it go and avoided his rolls and watched his personal torture begin.

haven't, they only think they have... there isn't a sushi bar in all
the US that serves real wasabi, not a one. Your little tube is

I don't know if there are bargains on good wasabi. The tin of wasabi
powder that I have in the cupboard is 2 oz. It says a "serving size"
is 1/4 tsp and that there are 124 servings in the package. I seriously
doubt this stuff would give you what you're looking for, as it's not
very good. Made in Japan, ingredients are Japanese horseradish,
mustard, and a couple food dyes. Don't know why I still have it
cluttering up the cupboard....ah, now it's gone. -aem

I think the only real wasabi we can get in the U.S. is from the
Pacific Coast. Someone once told me that Japan won't export wasabi, but
he could have been lying to me just to be funny.

What you're eating isn't wasabi. It's Japanese horseradish paste.

Real wasabi is a root (similar to ginger), that's grated fresh. It's not
as hot, and has a smoother finish.

There's a place in Oregon that farms it, as well as a place in New
Zealand. I think both mail order.

Do a Google or Yahoo search.

Personally, the tubes work okay for me when I do sashimi at home. The
powder just never seems to come out the right consistancy.

this is probably sacrilegious, but I love the wasabi/mayonnaise combination
that has just been made available at my local store...love it in sandwiches,
on grilled or bbq'd meats, chicken, fish, you name it :-)

has enough heat to give the "sinus rush" as well lol
