I remember all of those things. Some of them aren't even
that outdated. There were party lines in the neighborhood
across the street from me around 1975. Gasoline that same
year was around the same price you mention; a friend of mine
was 16 and had a car (IIRC it was a Ford Pinto) and picked
me up to go to school. I'd chip in a buck a week for gas. We
drove all over the danged place in that thing.

We went to a drive-in movie in the spring of 1977 with
ONE of our best friends. She was killed in a car crash
shortly after graduating from high school that year. That
was the last and only funeral I've ever attended. I swore
never again unless it was immediate family; thankfully it
has not been.

I built a clipper ship with Tinker Toys when I was 8
years old, including thread for outlining the sails. And
Lincoln logs were *not* made of plastic. Erector sets
were the domain of my brothers, as were walking talkies
and tearing apart transistor radios to see if they could
put them back together.

Teaberry gum was one of my favourites. Those wax bottles you
mention were called 'Nik-o-Nips' or something similar. The
Fuller Brush man actually *sold* my mom brushes. My dad used
a small Sony reel-to-reel tape recorder (with 3 inch reels)
while in VietNam to "write" letters to my mom. I was gifted
with that tape recorder and found a tape in it with one of
his letters; he was about my age (44) at the time he
recorded it.

Lots of memories here. Too many to recount.

We used to catch them and put them in mayonnaise jars with
holes punched in the lid with a hammer and nail. Sometimes
we squished off their lights and stuck them onto our ring
fingers as "diamonds". Pretty cruel I now feel, but back
then it didn't seem bad at all. I guess I have more empathy
now, even for bugs.

Shoot, nowadays an inch of snow is a dream come true. They
give snow days for the least little thing - or at least a
"2-hour" delay. Back in my day you still went to school
unless it was over a foot and there were no 2-hour delays.
You still had to walk the 1/2 mile to the bus stop and be
there by 7am to catch the bus.

We made a game of this called "Truth or Consequences".
Everyone spun around and the first one to fall down had to
perform a consequence. One of the most common ones we used
was making them eat a flower - usually a phlox flower.

When I was a kid we had a number of 78's with classical
music on them. One of them had Hungarian Rhapsody by Lizst
on it. But the other side was totally blank. I always
thought that was so cool. I wish I still had that record. I
used to practice my ballet to it.

Gold Bond stamps - I have a bunch of books I'm saving for
some reason I'm sure. My mother bought all kinds of krap
with those things, in particular a magazine rack/coffee

Yes. Cd's may have better sound quality but I miss being
able to change the speed at which a record plays. It was fun
being able to turn the speed up so that the singers sounded
like chipmunks.
