We Run For Days Like This

Sometimes life catches you off guard...........

My first half-marathon is 10/3. I'm hitting that point in my training where
I feel like I have to run if the schedule says run. (Which is fine - I can
tell it's part of my psych up process.) Everthing was set up to have this
morning's run be a complete disaster. Had to go out REALLY early in the
morning. Didn't get much sleep the night before. It was raining and I
didn't have my rain gear. Was in a rush because I had to be to work extra
early. Hit the road and........

It was the most fun run I've had in I don't know how long. Light enough to
see but no traffic on the roads. Couldn't see the 3/4" puddles that I'd
occasionally step into and would soak my shoes. I could have run forever.

So if things are feeling stale keep it up. It's days like this that make up
for the painful ones. And when you lace up your shoes you may be heading
out for one of those memorable ones...............

No matter how bad I feel, I always feel better after getting out the door.
Ocassionslly those first few miles may be rough, but I've never felt like I
should not have gone that day.

Golly, aren't *we* getting elitist? Is this fellows work not up to your
aesthetic standards? Personally, I thought he expressed himself nicely and
thoughtfully, which is more than I can say of you recent musings.

You are, my dear, in grave danger of losing your edge.

Bingo. I nearly always do these predawn darkness to sunrise runs, and I
treasure them.
And like you, I'm always short on sleep. We get virtually no rainy season
here, and so like you, when it's a wet morning run it's a double treat. I only
wish it could happen more often. I suppose if it did it wouldn't be as
special. See this short poem by William Stafford (I've posted this here
before):
