Hi Fellow Losers, Well over the holidays I managed to reclaim 5lbs, and every ounce is still clinging to me! Now that the jumbo jar of cashews from Costco is finally empty, this next week holds a lot of promise (and probably a lot of low-point soup). Stay happy and healthy. Julie

Hi Fellow Losers, Well over the holidays I managed to reclaim 5lbs, and every ounce is still
clinging to me! Now that the jumbo jar of cashews from Costco is finally empty, this next week holds
a lot of promise (and probably a lot of low-point soup). Stay happy and healthy. Julie

I knew it! (G)
Okay, a number of years ago, a local shop (macy's or nordstrom's-like) called Fredricks and Nelsons
(Seattle, like Nordstroms) had a candy called Frangos. It was packaged in an octogon shaped box.
Mint probably was the original flavor. Other flavors were developed. Kind of a small rectangular
truffle. An inner chocolate with flavor dipped in chocolate. Some turkey managed to get control and
sent them into bankruptcy. They ceased to exist. Another local, Bon Marche, took over the very
popular Frango line, purchasing it in the bankruptcy sale, I think. The Bon now is Bon-Macy's.
So they still produce the item but it was made for them by a local chocolateer (spelling?).
Recently, they changed manufacturers. The local guy decided to create a similar confection. A legal
bruhaha. He managed to develop something very similar but packaging was not permitted in the octogon
box. So they just made a larger plain plastic jar and it is distributed by Costco. Doing well from
what I understand.
Therein lies a long short story.
But it does have an axiom. Just this weekend, when I was discussing portion control with a Frango
freak (g), I discussed Skinny Cows and the individual and therefore, portion control angle, of one
item instead of a tub of ice cream. Then I noted that the old octogon Frango box held much fewer
candies then the Costco JAR she had already consumed. There was a tendency to hold back in the
octogon so that there would be some left over for another day/week. The larger jar, huge, actually,
does not cause that same tendency or hesitancy. There's plenty more. Therefore, more candies per
sitting and not as self-limiting.

Are these Frangos the same as the original Chicago based Frango Mints? At one time they were only
found for sale at Marshall Fields, and highly sought after. Now Target sells them also (Target is a
division of Fields), and the Chicago manufacturing plant has been shut down.

Ah, yes, Andes mints - she was an addict with those also - her Grandmother would always serve those.

YUP - you got it. Marshall Fields had some connection either with The Bon or or Fredricks. I can't
remember. I think that they were also originally a holiday item and then expanded to yearly
available.

Hey! I had the exact same plastic storage containers ... 'cept mine were filled with fudge and

Frango freak (g), I discussed Skinny Cows and the individual and therefore, portion control
angle, of one item instead of a tub of ice cream. Then I noted that the old octogon Frango box
held much fewer candies then the Costco JAR she had already consumed. There was a tendency to
hold back in the octogon so that there would be some left over for another day/week. The larger
jar, huge, actually, does not cause that same tendency or hesitancy. There's plenty more.
Therefore, more candies per sitting and not as self-limiting.

Glad something in the memory bank is working today. <G> I do remember them being a holiday item,
many years ago. When my sister first moved to the city she would buy everyone Frango's. Then they
became a year round item, then started expanding flavors if I recall correctly. It was somewhere
along this line that (to me anyway) they stopped being *special*. Probably a good thing, or I would
just have had one more thing to splurge on.
I don't know where they are being produced now, but it is no longer Chicago. And I just heard today
that [censored] May is also closing it's doors. Hub told me that when the stores empty their shelves,
that is it. I told him there was no way I was going to bring anymore chocolate into this house, at
this time! <g>

The cookies look yummy, but I love the panoramic landscape photo. I don't think my new digicam takes
panoramic shots... Something I should check into.
