We've had this suggestion repeatedly, lately. It seems to me a really bad
idea, highly likely to lead to a violent confrontation and with you in
the wrong. I would /strongly/ advise against any retaliation, other than
via the police.

strong solution of Head 'n Shoulders is quite a neat defence against
those who match speed with you and try it on.

If you've never got Head 'n Shoulders in your eyes, you should try it
(once) for the experience. Almost as good as Mace, and will always work
in your favour in court, ie:

Your Opponent: He assaulted me M'lud!
Mlud: What with?
Your Opponent: Erm... shampoo M'lud.

Just don't confuse the H&S bottle with your regular water bottle :-p

As I asserted in the recent "[censored]" thread this kind of thing is
fairly common. Something like this, or worse, happens to me about once
every 2 months on average; a lot more if you count aggressive shouting
from the passengers of overtaking cars. It's not personal; they do it
because you are a vulnerable target and they are in a position of
strength.

If you are in a position to report it, do so then forget about it. If
you're not then just forget about it.

I agree that this was "assault".

Sadly, I think the Police would require an independent witness before they
did much more than express their sympathy, which is of course impractical.

indeed, I have personal experience of that technique from the /very/
dim and distant past. The question of legality of tire deflation crops
up on u.l.m from time to time and most convincing opinions are that it
is criminal damage

perpetrators at the lights. He smiled sweetly at the driver, then leaned

Definately _not_ recommended behaviour, but damned funny!

Seriously tho, a while ago there were some peeps deflating car tyres as
some sort of environmental protest thingy. Was a quote from police that it
wasn't illegal so not much that could be done. All AFAICR thobut.

If the tyre is left in a fully deflated state for any length of time then
damage may occur to the internal plys of the sidewall (for low-profile tyres
this can be instant, but unlikely that a van will have these tyres). Then
criminal damage would have been committed and ('criminal' is a big clue)
that _is_ illegal.

It happened to me at traffic lights in Summertown in North Oxford the
last time we had a hot day -- in June about ten years ago I suppose --
and I caught up with them about two miles later half way down St Giles
when they were caught in the gridlock that is central Oxford.

Unfortunately, they were in a lorry cab with windows that started well
above my head so I had to content myself with waving at them as I passed.
