Wellgo makes good pedals. They make pedals for many other companies. I would say that at $20 they
are a bargain.

Yeah, they seem fine. Wellgos aren't Shimano quality, but usually they're good enough. There are
sometimes compatibility issues when mixing/matching with Shimano stuff. The deal on these (823) is
that they come with cleats, and those cleats are compatible with Shimano SPD pedals, but Shimano
multi-release cleats are not compatible with the 823 pedals.

I've broken the metal tab on the latch mechanism on 3 different pairs of Wellgo pedals. I've also
had a couple of bearings self-destruct. They're so cheap though that I just use some for parts.
Generally they operate pretty smoothly, though not as nice as Shimano pedals.

I have two identical pairs of the 20 dollar 'special spd' pedals from nashbar. ive been told they
are relabeled wellgo. as cheap as they are, i get a big kick thinking that shimano cleats cost the
same as my pedals/cleats. when i bought them originally, i thought it was a cheap move, and id
upgrade one day. after a lot of hard riding in varying conditions, i have nary a pullout, nary a
problem. ill stick with the cheap wellgos.

I had the same problem with the tabs breaking. On one pair it happened after only six months or so
of use. At the same time, I didn't want to put more expensive pedals on my bike because of my
(perhaps exaggerated) fear of theft here in NYC.

I solved the problem by getting the Wellgo M7's back when Nashbar was getting rid of them for $20
last year. Like the top-end Shimano spd pedal, these don't have a metal platform with tabs. I really
like these pedals. They do have a couple of drawbacks, though -- the M7 cleat is like an ATAC cleat
in that it is a single piece (not counting the mounting bolts). It doesn't have the same range of
adjustibility as the Shimano spd and Wellgo 800 two-piece cleats. I haven't found that to be a
problem, but it might be for others.

Also, someone who rated these pedals on www.mtbr.com said that he had trouble disengaging unless he
lubricated the cleat or latch on a regular basis, particularly after he had been through mud. The
Wellgo instructions came with a warning about lubrication, so I assume his experience wasn't an
isolated one. When I first used the pedals, I did notice a rougher disengagement if I hadn't
lubricated them in a while and nearly became locked in on one occasion, but the problem seems to
have gone away once the cleats wore down a bit. Buy I use them on the road, not in muddy conditions.

Unfortunately, Supergo seems to be the only mail order outfit to carry these, but at $40:

You're the first I've heard that didn't rave about the eggbeaters. Why? I've never tried them, use
Time ATAC's myself.

JensonUSA has the Shimano 515 for $32, the Wellgo 823's for $20, both of which are pretty
amazing deals.
