What about all those newbies?

What is the problem, if you aren't interested in a thread, don't read
it.

I don't think it is very welcoming to new forum members/new riders to
just tell them to search for previous threads. They want interaction
as well as information.

Don't forget that we were all noobies once upon a time. Even Kris Home
and George Peck were noobies once!

If the Unicycling grows then Unicycles will be massed produced reducing
the cost. It would be nice to get KHs for $200-$300 instead of $575! I
think that all the noobies make the AEbikes deal possible! There will
be more money dumped into development and design. More models will come
out. These are great things.

On the other hand if people are Unicycling all over the place we ae not
going to be a special close knit community any more.

I am also a member of enjoybmx.com and and don't know why I bothered
because to be brutally honest, everyone on those forums are t**ts!

most people get along.

I couldn't agree with you more about the mass production costs. I also
think the more unicyclists the better really. It's always nice to meet

I don`t think this is a problem at all. the more known unicyle gets,
unicyclists will get more and more sponsors and start to even get some
real money with it.

I've noticed the proliferation of newbies on the forums too. New
unicyclists is always great; more of us to dispel the circus image, and
a bigger market so we can have more and better unicycles for less!

But here on the forums it makes me wonder if we need a slower way for
new riders to get acquainted with us before posting the standard newbie
posts. As I have suggested in the past, it might be a good time for
Gilby to reconsider a "cooling off period" before new forum members can
post, and maybe a sticky at the top with some basic forum guidelines,
such as how to find answers to the obvious questions, where the search
button is, and whatever etiquette we (he) chooses to suggest.

Welcome newbies! Read before writing! Use the search button (near the
top of the page), it really works!

Might be just me but I'd find a "manditory no posting period" annoying
if I was a unicyclist who'd only just found the forum (I've been in
that situation) and needed to ask something. I think most people these
days know "forum etiquette" and I think it's basically just the 10-14yr
old noobies who ask the unreasonably unnecessary questions... but the
same applies to people that age wherever you go and you just have to be
patient.

Yes they can get annoying sometimes, but it certainaly isn't "new":

I think blocking new members from posting for a certain time or
something to that effect is worthless. It would only discourge people.
Maybe a more subtle way to go about it would be to just not post so
much in the "noob threads", just give them a link or an explaination of
they're problem and leave it at that.

We need a good technical trials discussion on here again, or something.

.... from posting before reading. That's the idea. The vast majority of
newbie questions are basic stuff with easily found answers. Often, if
people just need a question answered they should prefer to find the
answer right away rather than wait for people to respond to a thread
they may already have answered in the past.

Agreed. It's always a shame when the interesting discussions get pushed
off page 1 by repetitive newbie posts... 🙂

More seriously, in the past we've talked about separating out beginner
stuff from advanced stuff, or other ways to divide things up by topic,
but the conclusions was always that we didn't want to desert the
newbies either. If there was a newbie forum and nobody experienced
wanted to post there, it would bring the newbies back to the other
forums anyway.

Also there's always the question of which forum to tie to the
rec.sport.unicycling newsgroup. But I think a newbie forum might be
worth a try, especially if Gilby can find a volunteer out there who'd
like to help monitor it, and perhaps move older threads on newbie
topics into that forum for better searchability.

On the Home of Poi forums there is an automatic search done on your
title before a new thread is started. The search results are presented
to you, giving you the option to explore previous threads or continue
with your new thread. I'm not sure how effective this has been in
curbing the lack-of-use-of-search-function problem as I'm not an active
member anymore.

I just looked at the front page, there's like two threads from newbies.

One is asking a specific question about a specific unicycle, which is
exactly the kind of thing these forums are great for, I don't think
they could have answered that question by searching the forums.

The other one is asking the old 24 vs 26 vs 29 thing. Which kind of
comes up really often, but is still an interesting one, cos people's
opinions on it seem to change all the time, I know mine does, depending
on what muni I've been riding recently.

The rest is all stuff that is of general interest (or at least of
interest to people who do particular types of riding), or random
questions about specific things, which again wouldn't be good for the
search engine.

I think that for some reason, on the internet there's always people who
moan about 'noooobs' asking nooob questions, when they could use the
search, even when they're only a tiny percentage of the threads. It
always seems a bit weird and unfriendly to me, it's like if at juggling
club, any time someone came along and said I'd like to learn to juggle
3 balls, we said 'if you go to the library, there's a book about
juggling, that'll tell you how', there wouldn't be many members and it
wouldn't be such a nice place to be. Teaching new people is part of the
joy of being good at something.

I've gone round the world and met unicyclists off here, which is super
cool. But I've done the same with bikes too, off other web sites, or by
popping into bike shops, or randomly meeting people in pubs. I think
all that happens if there are tons of people, is that there are enough
people in most places for there to be a special close knit community in
every town, as well as these kind of internet communities. Which can
only be a good thing, it's great that there are loads of people on the
internet, but it'd be double awesome if there were that many people out
riding every weekend wherever you lived.

Maybe someone could create a "New to Unicycling" discussion group, then
you wouldn't have to look at all the posts unless you wanted to help
some people out. Also this would help in narrowing search info, you
could just search the newbie group instead all of rec.sport.unicycling.
The searching functionality on these forums is less than spectacular
(could just be me), everytime I search for something I have to wade
through tons of unrelated posts, I see how people could get frustrated
and just post the question. It would be nice if only the posts with
matches were returned instead of the whole thread.
