I often hear people in this group talking about going to the chat room.
What's the difference between the chatroom and the newsgroup?

the chat channel is IRC (Internet Relay Chat) where the posts are real time.
There is also a way to get to it, via the web. Unfortunately, I don't
use that interface to get there, but a lot of folks do. Maybe someone
who is familiar with the web address, can post it here.
Also, if you decide to come into the chat, stay for a bit, and talk.
We like to meet new folks..😉
And change your name from Anonymous to whatever nickname you want: you
can do it one of several ways. There is a box on the lower right
corner, where you can put your nickname you want to use in the
channel, and then hit the Enter key.

What the hell is it with this stupid irc.penguinpowered.ca server? I
can't connect with my irc client or the java website. Why is the
certificate no good? grrrrr..

It's a real time conversation. Here is the access information (which
should be included in all chat announcements):
rfc channel:
http://www.penguinpowered.ca/~vexorg/pjirc/rec.food.cooking.html
or
http://tinyurl.com/dmdb6
or on IRC:
Server: irc.penguinpowered.ca
Port 6667
channel ID: #rec.food.cooking

Did you try the various servers? Like irc2.penguinpowered.ca, and
irc5.penguinpowered.ca.? Just keep on changing the numbers....
Some of us see you trying to connect...and wonder what has been
keeping you off the channel..
Christine
if you're interested. the link is....

Stupid ass server policy is what's keeping me off. Most of the time,
it's no prob. Others, I get a disconnect and try again and again and
then I get throttled ...."your repeating connection attempts too fast.
You now cannot try to connect for another 5 (or 10 or 15)
minutes". As for the java website, I tried and it ask if I'd accept a
non-qualified certificate and I reluctantly answered yes, and it still
disconnected me.

What she said 🙂 AND (be warned) the topics stray all over the place but we
do manage to talk about food!

So what can be done in a chat thingy that can't be done in a newsgroup? Or
is it exactly the same, just real-time.

What can't be done in the newsgroup is instant response. A chat room is like a
real time meeting of real people, except that you are typing your
conversations.

It's realtime and not exactly the same as rec.food.cooking. It's *much
more* like sitting around talking to people. We stray OT but always manage
to come back to food 🙂
rfc chat via the web:
http://www.penguinpowered.ca/~vexorg/pjirc/rec.food.cooking.html
or on IRC client:
Server: irc.penguinpowered.ca (or penguinpowered2.ca; penguinpowered5.ca,
etc.) if it won't resolve the channel
Port 6667
channel ID: #rec.food.cooking

In a chart room, you have to listen and speak to everyone at
once. Kinda like the old-style party lines.
Usenet newsgroups have threaded discussions. You can read them
at your lesiure (and respond if you care), or choose not to. Or
respond at a later time. Whatever floats your boat. The
conversation will still be there 48 hours from now.
IRC is much more demanding of your time. Once you log in you're
kinda committed for the next few minutes or the next few hours.
There's much less substance in chat-rooms and there's no
filtering out garbage.

I don't have a problem with the web-site certificate, it's the
unsigned Java applet (for the web interface).

this got me a cute 404 message, with a helplink to fbi.gov I'm probably
not going to be chatting soon.

LOL! That's a joke. Just try again and you'll likely get through. I
love that screen!
