  1. Why is it whenever I find something I like, it disappears from store shelves? Take
    for example:
I finally found a breakfast sausage that tastes like the sausage of my youth. I don't
eat it often, for health reasons, but when I do, I want it to taste good. I like
Johnsonville original recipe sausage links. Tasty, easy to make. But then they had to
go and come out with maple syrup (ewww) and brown sugar (double eww) versions, and
the stores around my house only seem to ever have those two in stock now. Grr! First,
the sausage is bad enough for me, I don't need to add sugar (which, being diabetic, I
don't need to add in most any case).

Ok, done venting now. You may now join your regularly scheduled programming, already

Cheek out the Johnsonville web pages. They still make the original.
you may be able to find them elsewhere near by. And ask your market to
order the regular ones. Some stores can be accommodating.

    And feel better, soon!

have you ever tried making some fresh sausage patties yourself? I know
Penzeys sells various sausage spice mixes, but I've never tried them. It
might help you obtain the flavor you remember from your youth?

I've had tremendous luck getting on the Johnsonville web site and emailing
them direct about the product I liked and had disappeared. It was less than
a month and the regional sales manager made sure the smoked bratwurst were
available almost everywhere in town. It's ridiculous that you can't get the
Johnsonville original and you tell them so.

I agree that both of those flavors are hardly edible.

It's that darn ad campaign that's going on for the maple syrup brats (ack).

Exactly what I suggest. And breakfast sausage is easy to prepare....
and when made yourself you'll know who's in it. It's very easy to make
far better sausage than anything you can buy.

Matter of personal taste. I make some with maple syrup and dried apples in
    it. Yummy!

This drives me absolutely INSANE. I find it especially irritating with
cleaning products. I don't think I have been able to purchase the same
toilet bowl cleaner each time I have gone to buy it.

And I agree - maple and BS sausage is NASTY.

I am not sure it has to be, as there have been many breakfasts of
pancakes with a side of sausage around here, where the links have
surely taken a dip in the Nectar of Vermont, and there is maple
flavored bacon all over the place, but it still seems odd that a
manufacturer would undercut its own main brand line in favor of the
    newer ones. Live and learn.

    Once only. :-p

Dipping sausage or bacon in the remains of the butter and syrup from
pancakes is one thing. Having it mixed in with them is just gross for
    some reason.

Probably because it's a fake ester "flavoring" and not the real thing.

Why don't you ask the manager of the grocery stores where you shop if
they can stock it. I just saw Johnsonville's original recipe sausage on
the shelves of a supermarket near me yesterday, so I know they're still
available. Perhaps your supermarket was just sold out of that variety.

Johnsonville puts some strange additives in their brats. I quit
buying them when I discovered their beer n' bratwurst links (my fave)
make my fingers ache. No kidding. The original brats, no problem.
But, it took several times eating the beer n' brat style to realize
they really cause my fingers to become slightly painful for about
24hrs, like I was suffering from some form of arthritis. Not
incapacitatingly painful, but annoyingly noticeable. Weird.

If you do the wrong thing with your sausage, your fingers get numb and you
can go blind too. I just wear glasses.

You're right - it isn't real maple syrup as it would be far too
expensive to add that to mass produced goods.

What most Americans know of maple syrup isn't really maple syrup. It's
    sugar syrup and flavoring components.

Even in this house the SO can't abide real maple syrup. But when making
certain things I have to use the real thing because using the fake stuff
    is just unacceptable.
