I need a bike to get to work, I figure I'll be putting about 10 miles or less on it daily. I've been using a cheap $80 huffy womans bike from kb toys (im a guy) for some time now and don't mind it at all, but its my moms. Should I be getting a road bike, for max speed on the road? Or a mountain bike? I don't want to do alot of damage if I ride over potholes and stuff. I know $200 wont buy anything special...should I go used? I just want something as fast as possible for my money and relatively reliable.
I know even $1000 bike is considered cheap to you guys, but put next to the $80 huffy these bikes must be an improvement, right? Because I'm happy with the cheap huffy.
i would definitely recommend looking for a used bike, you are bound to get something that will hold up better if you shop carefully. many of the less expensive new bikes are really just 'throw aways' that will be more expensive to fix than replace when something goes wrong.
I'm VERY new to cycling lets get that out of the way. But I've heard alot of good things about the kent bikes. For about 147 apparently the denali is a decent starter road bike, and for 550 or so I know kent makes a carbon forked bike that is really pissing off the bike snobs as it is competing with bikes two to three times the cost. I'm personaly going to give the denali a shot. I know alot of people expect you to pay 1k for a bike, but I just can't do that. I was stuck between the denali and the trek for about 250. Figure I'll try the denali if it works well I'll save up for the 550 dollar carbon version maybe. when you get yours write about it I would love to see how the denali compares real world to the more expensive bikes.

you can get a dawes lightning sport for about 240.00 (includes the shipping) and you will get a solid road bike. It is better than getting some used bike. I have put over 600 miles on mine with no problems...
