I plan on running the cable from my bar end shifters along the handlebar and
exiting at the end of the bar tape. Is there a brand of housing that is best
suited for this, or will any housing do?

For shifter cables, use "SIS" housing. See:

Regular shift cable housing. Make sure it's of a non-compression type if
your shifting is indexed. If you are using index housing, you might find
installation a lot easier if you pre bend the housing before re-wrapping
the handlebars.

_ Is there any special reason for this, or do you just like the
looks of it?
