  1. Ok, I use my mt. bike mainly on the road. I have Specialized Fat Boy 1.25" slicks on it and it rolls pretty smooth. I'd like to put my body in a more aerodynamic or road bike position though. I tried flipping my stem over but that didn't feel right. Is there a different stem or different bar I could use to achieve more efficient position? If it makes a difference I have a 03 Specialized Rockhopper. Thanks.

you're going to struggle to get very aero on an MTB....try and lower your frontal area as much as you can, but you may end up compromising handling. The wide bars and upright position are your achilles heel. Is it worth ditching the MTB for a road bike?

That's my problem...I don't have $1000 to spend right now on a road bike. Trying to make what I have work for now.

  4. Have you thought about putting a set of road drop bars on your bike? Don't know the first thing about mtbs or there set-up, but I assume that you should be able to get a stem that works with your setup?

Anything is possible with enough money.

There are all manner of bars and stems. Sometimes you have to experiment. I have also seen aerobars on MTB.

Ok, I'm not exactly sure what the drop bars are? Anyone have a link they could post so I could look at them? Thanks.

Road bike bars. You will also need new shifters, and other bits. This switchover ain't for the novice on a budget.

Is there any improvement I could make...on a budget?

I'm sure there are more options in stems than just flipping yours, but without seeng your setup and you on it,I wouldn't try and guess.if you don't have one a flat bar is an option over a riser type. As mentioned, aerobars are one way and some are inexpensive enough.
