  1. I don't know where to post this, so perhaps someone can point me to a better newsgroup.

I am twenty-six years old. I am about forty to fifty pounds overweight (235 lbs. @ 6'1"😉. About
three and a half years ago, I started to hear and feel a loud "pop!" in my knees with every step up
my stairs to my apartment. It doesn't hurt, it's just loud, and I can both hear and feel it popping
as my entire skeletal structure vibrates.

This has gone on for the years since it started and it's just been getting louder and louder. I am
going to see a doctor -- would a chiropractor be the right kind, or just a family doctor? -- but I
was wondering if anyone here has any idea what is going on?

I haven't looked into this already because it doesn't hurt. But it is so loud that at this point it
is probably as loud to other people as someone snapping their fingers gently. It is really starting
to scare me. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this is? Like a dent in my knee joint or
    something?

There have been occasional hints of subtle pains going down the stairs, but it's no different than
the "pain" you feel when you pop your knuckles while using them.

I haven't had any strange accidents that would cause this. I haven't pushed my knees extensively at
all, except the usual charging up and down stairs as needed, but I do often run up when I go up, for
some rare but exhilerating exercise. I am no longer in that upstairs apartment but I do have an
upstairs office that I go up and down several times every day. I never heard of anything like this
and I'm really worried. Am I going to die soon? (Heh.)

    Thanks for any help, Jon

    See an internist.

A for what it is, I don't recall exactly what it is, but all my joints - from ankle to hip - crack
when I walk at times. I was it's harmless, and apparently hasn't killed me.

"Charging" up the stairs is an accident, especially with overweight. (someone else here would have
to explain PSI on a joint)

Another accident could happen if you were my upstairs neighbour.

It's a sign of joint, ligament or tendon problems leading to eventual probably early arthritis.

How do I know this? My shoulders have same problems. The pop'ing or crack'ing isn't the problem, the
    unrelenting pain is.

My brother had to have surgery on his knees very young, his wasn't from stomping but sports-related.
(he thinks) I recognize how you describe going down (the stairs) as a problem that his surgery did
not resolve, so nip it in the bud (or ameliorate the situation)....

Lose the weight and strengthen your muscles and joints (etc) with physiotherapy, swimming, walking.
And please, don't keep "stomping" up stairs. J

  4. Search on google for lyme disease and knees. Your symptoms ounds very similar to many Lyme patients.

    good luck

Yes, but aren't you hypermobile or hyperflexible? (if I'm remembering correctly) J

See a family doctor. It's a simple problem, probably related to your obesity, but you should
probably be examined to try to make sure it's not something serious. You could see a chiropractor or
a physical therapist if you were having pain and your doctor can assure it's not anything serious,
but if you're looking for a diagnosis, a chiropractor would be a waste of time.

Hypermobile I think is what he said (more 'give' than usual and why I can dislocate my shoulder by
    sleeping, sigh).
