So there I was, riding along to work this morning, when my pedal decides that it wants a divorce. It's no longer happy with the way the crankshaft is (failing to) meet its needs, so it packed up its bags, and walked out the door ... with another 5 km still to go to reach work. Picture it. Me on my bike. Bike with the crankshaft. Right pedal still in place, wondering where its friend has gone. Left pedal shaft still in place, with a great big long screw thread exposed to the open air ... and my left foot, waving around in mid air, with the clipless pedal still attached. Short term (ie: getting home tonight), I have three options: (1) Public transport. Doable, but not particularly attractive. (2) Stick the pedal back on, screw it up, and hope it holds for the 16 km trip. (3) Call in the RACV, and have them either screw the pedal back on, or pay for a taxi. Medium term (ie: over the next week), I suspect I'll want to get myself a new set of clipless pedals, and whilst I'm at it, I might as well replace my shoes as well. I can't complain too loudly, though; after all, I've had these pedals and shoes since around 1996. Comments? Suggestions? Cheers. -- My Usenet From: address now expires after two weeks. Nice try, but I have the princely sum of five dollars with me...
Thanks nonetheless, though. On the whole, I think I'll screw the pedal
back on, and hope it works well enough to get me home tonight (it's
"only" sixteen km, and if worst comes to worst, I'll be travelling on a
bus route that comes reasonably close to home, so I can always lock it
up to a convenient lamp post and come back with the car.)

how long is the screw thread? Use that as a place to put the foot.
Think of it as a chance to improve the pedalling action on the other
leg....
