I'd go with you want. I just got a Trek Equinox 7 yesterday. I love the thing! Since its not on sale, doesn't mean you have to buy it RIGHT NOW. lol
Maybe just save a bit longer and get what you want.

I would also find another dealer.
Not sure if yoou could neg. a deal but...
in my neck of the woods you would expect 10% off min. at this time of year.
There are a few shops around here...
that might not give you a minus cash discount but might give you 10% of the cost of the bike on an in store credit.
If you do end up paying the ticket price,
I would suggest that you ask for free maintenance...minimum.

I would definetly NOT do business with the first bike shop. If they lie about the sale, They would probably also lie about wether or not it's been test riden alot. Find another shop and tell the first shop they lost your business because of thier lies. (and tell your friends).

Howard Steele, you are dead on! I deal with vendors a lot where I work. I just awarded a $598,000 contract and they got it because they toed the line and the other contractor thought they had a lock on the business. We have a golden rule there...

I bought a Trek 1500 last year. My LBS gave me some grief and a price of $1100. I ended up buying it at a shop 180 miles away, for $900. I let the local shop know that and that they are pretty much unneeded in my life. I do my own work, actually I have seen some of the work the LBS does and the thought frightens me that they may get their meathooks on one of my bikes.

That's a bummer, lying about a sale like that. Considering the '07 bikes are on their way, I don't see why they didn't put the bike on sale. Maybe it was an underhanded sales tactic. Personally, I would look high and low for the bike at the best price, and if I couldn't find it, I would buy that bike and look for another LBS to do business with.

I'd check around the internet and look on Ebay. Once you are sure of the size bike you need, finding a good deal on THE ONE that you want isn't all that hard. For instance, R&A Cycles in NJ has a 10% off sale right now and I just saved $400 off the bike I scoured the internet for looking for a deal. LBS in Southern CA aren't too supportive of those looking for deals on high end bikes because cycling isn't as "seasonal" around here as elsewhere.

Ya know, there are only about a billion Trek dealers out there. I'm sure somebody will put this bike on sale. Keep looking. Go to Trek's website and search for dealers in your area. Give them a call and see if they have this bike in your size. After you find your best deal, wheel your bike into the original LBS and let them know they lost a sale because they wouldn't work with you....
