Wheel rubbing

  1. I have a 2001 Trek 5200 ... yesterday while riding I noticed a noise and
    looked down to see my rear wheel was rubbing near the bottom bracket. I
    took the wheel off and then put it back on (thinking it was not seeded
    right). That helped just a little bit (so that it wasn't rubbing so bad).
    I thought perhaps the skewer needed to be replaced but tried that and it
    didn't seem to help much either. What should I be looking for or trying?
    What could the problem be? This is the first time I've noticed this
    behavior and I ride the bike a lot.

    Any and all help would be most appreciated.

  2. I should have also mentioned ... the gap between the wheel and the frame is
    not equal on each side. It is rubbing on one side but a nice gap on the
    other side (that's what made me think perhaps it was seeded evenly).

    It can only be that either the wheel is not dished or the frameset rear
    triangle/dropouts are not straight.

    Or, that your adjustment screws on your dropouts (if you have them - some
    do, some don't) aren't properly adjusted. Is this a general trend of the
    wheel, being off to the left side, or is there a wobble in the rim? Do you
    have dropout adjustment screws? Did this start happening suddenly, and has
    the bike been hit or crashed lately? Tell us more.

  5. I only noticed the rubbing (and the sound it caused) recently. Their is a
    small wobble in the rim. Not sure about dropout adjustment screws ... I'm
    fairly ignorant to the bike (I've been riding for a while but can only do
    the basics - change a tire, chain, handlebar tape). How can I determine if
    I have dropout adjustment screws?

    I just looked at a picture of a Trek 5200 on the Trek website, and it
    looks like it has vertical dropouts, just like every other recent Trek
    I've seen. You won't find any adjustment screws.

    Does the rubbing only occur when the wobble passes by the chainstay,
    or is it constant? If after having your LBS re-true the wheel it still
    rubs, something has clearly happened to either the wheel or the frame.

    Have you had the wheel serviced recently, like having the hub bearings
    cleaned and repacked? It's highly unlikely, but the shop could have
    put the axle spacers back in the wrong place.

    Another thing to look for would be damage to the frame. Perhaps one of
    the bonded joints on either end of one of the chainstays or seatstays
    has failed. This could cause things to shift. One quick way to check
    frame alignment would be to mount another wheel. Borrow one from a
    friend, or have your LBS do it. If another wheel is centered you know
    the problem is with your wheel.

    starts in the middle (where I expect it). After just a short ride it is
    once again closer on one side (non-chain side). The wheel needed to be
    trued ... so I just took the bike to the LBS and will have them retrue the
    wheel and look into the rubbing issue too. I wanted to see if this was
    something I could do (cause the shop's turnaround time is almost a week -
    luckily I have another bike to ride).

    This is from the wheel moving in the dropout because it isn't being
    held tight enough. Force from the right (drive) side pulls the wheel
    forward on that side and it 'pivots' around the left dropout to the
    left and the tire starts rubbing on the chainstay.

    Tighten the wheel more. Maybe a better quick release skewer will have
    stronger parts that will give more bite. When you go pick up the bike,
    talk to them about this.

  9. I did indeed try another skewer ... and I also tried tightening the wheel
    tigher ... that may have helped ... but very very slightly.

    This is from the wheel moving in the dropout because it isn't being
    held tight enough. Force from the right (drive) side pulls the wheel

    If the axle isn't perfectly centered (or if washers/spacers are missing or
    mis-sized), you can have a little too much axle sticking out past the nuts on
    the end. Then when the wheel is put into the frame, and the quick release
    clamped, you won't get a strong grip on the frame since the quick release is
    pressing the axle end, not the frame. When the axle is in the frame, the ends
    should be recessed slightly (from the outer edge of the frame) on both sides.
    Getting this right can be tricky, you have to count the number of threads
    protruding past the nut on both sides

    I have a similar problem on my Cannondale. Not sure what material
    your dropout is made from (I doubt it's carbon, I'm guessing some kind
    of metal insert). On the aluminum Cannondale, the dropout had a
    depression worn into it on the drive side from the force of the axle
    being pulled toward the front of the bike by pedaling.

    This causes the axle to move farther forward (not down in the slot,
    but forward into the frame parallel to the ground) on the drive side,
    which causes the wheel to be closer to the left chainstay at the
    bottom bracket, even on a perfectly true and dished wheel. It's not
    so bad yet that the tire rubs like yours, but it might be something to
    look at on your bike. At some point I intend to file away a little of
    the dropout on the non-drive side to match the missing bit on the
    drive side, as soon as I have the time and gather up the courage to
    take a file to my frame.

    From your description it sounds like you might have a broken axle. I
    have twice experienced exactly the same symptoms you describe, and
    both times it was due to a broken axle. I only weight about 135lbs,
    so you don't have to be a heavy weight or hit a deadly pot hole in
    order to break an axle. Don't delay, your skewer may be all that's
    holding it together...
