Wheels under $500?

Keep an eye out for sales. I was able to snag a set of these bad boys for under $500 last year: http://www.competitivecyclist.com/product-components/2011-mavic-ksyrium-elite-wheelset-8536.267.0.html

The Kysriums are great. The difference was noticeable right away. A friend uses Fulcrum 5s and really likes them as well.

First off, the Ksyriums are some of the least aerodynamic wheels currently available. The semi box style rim doesn't slice through headwinds well at all and the oversized spokes aren't helping much either. Additionally, both the Ksyriums and the EA90s are quite heavy to be considered true upgrades. You could go with something like a Kinlin XR270 rim laced to White Industries H2/H2 hubs for right around 500 bucks. These would be much more durable than the options you are looking at now.

Does anyone have any thoughts on ROL Volants? I want to upgrade by SSR's and I've spent some time considering my budget (500-600) . Volants seems to be getting great reviews for what that's worth. Ride 2-3 times a week. Not much into racing but like everyone want to go faster.

You never know.
Get a custom set. Going that route will allow you to get great hubs, the number of spokes appropriate for you and the way your ride, and excellent rims. There is nothing special about Rol wheels.

No matter what, you're not going to sense any speed difference between two sets of wheels since that actual difference in velocity at a given power input between different wheel sets isn't huge.

I'd go to the universal cycles wheel builder and build up some with ultegra or dura ace hubs and some good rims.
