It's the same in Australia, bikes outsell cars and yet there's hardly
any to be seen on the streets. My guess is they're hanging up unused in
sheds and afetr a few years end up at the dump.

Actually, after actually thinking about it, it occurs to me that cars
last much longer than they used to. In the 50's and 60's a car with
100,000 miles was a rare thing. I ran my last car 260,000 miles without
a major problem and it may still be on the road today. If cars last 2 to
4 times as long as they used to, multiply the production by 2 to 4 to
get cars on the road. See chart:

Of course we probably put more miles per year on a car now. On the other
hand, most bikes today probably don't last much longer than they did 50
years ago. Possibly less because cheap bikes are so much more complex
and fragile now.

Also depends on whether you're riding or not. When I ride to work I see
dozens, when I drive I see few. Cyclists aren't allowed on the
freeways, so I never see any when I'm driving on them.

Cyclists are relatively unobtrusive (as in "I didn't see him Officer"😉 and so it is easy not to notice how many bikes are on the streets . Except for bike messengers, who seem to make themselves known quite often.

They're driving around in their cars.

Just buying and owning things doesn't mean that they will be used.

Firearms sales rise more rapidly than ammunition sales.

To see if bicycling is increasing, check if more bicycle tires are
being sold.

Dozens of motorcars being driven too, I would wager.

Here are my observations regarding the subject:

* Leisurely "after dinner" rides/riders around the sub-division.

* RV'ers alternative campground
transportation.

* A few brave souls with the courage to actually adopt the bicycle as
a means of utilitarian transportation.

While I've seen an increase in cycling commuters, they relocate
themselves to the sidewalks rather than force the issue among the
incompetents in automobiles.

Many of my MOTORCYCLING friends DO NOT commute on their motorcycles for
the same reasons.

As we all know, the "skills" test required to obtain a drivers license
is minimal....and the "means" test to keep one often stems from the
injury or even death of another.

Bottom line... good roads, great technology , and bad drivers....what a
waste!

Hey Carl,

Unless someone writes a paper on bike tire selling statistics in the
U.S, I cannot validate your claims. Just face the facts. We're losing
people to this wonderful sport.Ofcourse, one might see dozens of
cyclists while trundling down the road, but its not whether you see or
not. Worldwide, we have lesser cyclists here, and one of the highest
percentages of obesity. I only hope that through my hobby and passions
I can influence someone else.
