  1. Took a trip over to Delicious Orchards yesterday, they sell
produce. It's a very nice place to go, there's always something
    to entice you.

Somehow I managed to walk out with $70 worth of stuff, not
all that much of it produce. Yeah, I got eggplant, strawberries,
onions, bananas, dates and prunes, etc. Couple of oranges and
    a grapefruit.

    Hardly $70 worth of produce.

Got some italian peppers, so also picked up some hot sausage
and a sesame loaf of bread. Sausage and peppers last night for
    dinner, that's always good.

Other than that, Irish soda bread, cashiew brittle, eclairs (they have
an in-store bakery), a cream cheese pie, cookies ... stuff like that
made up the bulk of the bill.

Haven't been there in a while, went a little overboard on the
not-so-good for you stuff, next time I'll be better.

Will be making eggplant parm this week.

I donno, that sounds like a lot of good stuff even at $70. I never get out
of Whole Foods or Market Street for less then that, and that take is usually
cheeses, hard to find import beers and some of those great specialty items
    they carry.

Would this be the place I remember in central Jersey?

What is an eggplant parm? Oh I love fruits! Especially oranges!

Same here, you can pick up just a couple things that seem
disproportionately expensive and the bottom line is skewed.
For instance, the cheescake pie was $10 and the eclairs, I
didn't look but I bet 2 came to $5. A healthy head start to
$70. The cookies aren't cheap, either.

Forgot to get the apple cider donuts.

    Yes! I live near there.

You didn't play for the Giants, did you? (smile) I think that
every time I see your LT.

What, no apple cider doughnuts??? LOL

Delicious Orchards was one of my favorite places to shop for produce and
baked goods when I lived in NJ - everything was always so fresh, and there
were so many varieties of fruits and vegetables available. Their holiday
pies were terrific and always in great demand; you took your life in your
hands going to DO the day before Thanksgiving or Christmas! (Of course,
now that I'm diabetic it's probably a good thing that I live several hundred
    miles away from Delicious Orchards...sigh.)

Thanks for reminding me about how wonderful DO is, Nancy - I'll have to stop
in there the next time I'm in Monmouth County to visit my family.

I'm sorry, parm is such a common way of saying it, I didn't
even notice I'd shortened it like that. Like, you'd get veal
    parm, chicken parm.

Eggplant parmegiana (sp), bread and saute eggplant slices
(yes I salt and drain), layer with cheese and tomato sauce,
    like a lasagna.

They had some nice ones, and something new for them,
they had samples of a couple of them. Delicious, I haven't
had an orange in a while.

Isn't that funny, I mentioned them in a later post?
    Those apple cider donuts.

You can't even do that anymore. You have to order them in advance
and then they put a tent up outside, you wait to get into the store.

That does bring back some good memories. We lived in Freehold years back
when the kids were small, and we could make an outing of going through that
    great place.

No, no football in my background, though LT is a nickname I got way back in
my military days. Not a lieutenant, but in the military you are forever
putting your initials on something, and it just stuck.

I was going to ask about them... We never leave DO without those delicious
donuts. Their strawberry-rhubarb pie is to die for, also.

Unfortunately, we don't get up there much anymore. My hubby is from Little
Silver, and we always made sure to visit DO when visiting his parents. (They
sold their house 3 1/2 years ago and now live in SoCal full-time. We still
have friends of the family in Jersey, but we don't get back there as often
    as before.)

We've ordered stuff to send to my transplanted in-laws (used to live in
Little Silver), who now live in SoCal. A little taste of home...

Awww, you're just as sweet as those donuts! :-) I remember how good they
tasted, and that's good enough for me. However...I certainly will treat
myself to one the next time I'm up north - I'll just factor those carbs into
    my meal plan that day.

There used to be a restaurant called the "Happy Apple Inn" sort of across
the street from Delicious Orchards. (I worked in nearby Freehold for several
years, so the Happy Apple was a frequent gathering place for work-related
luncheons.) Is that still there? Probably not...every time I go to NJ I'm
amazed at how many places are gone. :-(

You mentioned Irv's Deli in a post a while back, and I was amazed that it
was still there. I lived in Neptune, just a short block and a half away
from Irv's. It wasn't one of our very favorite restaurants, but it sufficed
when I just didn't feel like cooking and didn't want to go very far. Their
homemade chicken noodle soup was really good!

My gosh - I just checked the link, and they've got mail-order apple cider
doughnuts! Get thee behind me, American Express card! LOL

Thanks so much for posting the link, Mary. I've subscribed to their
newsletter for a little taste of home. :-)

No, it's not there, but out of curiosity, I googled Happy Apple Inn.
There is one in Imlaystown, west of here in NJ. Related? I wonder.
They are also closed on Mondays, so I couldn't ask anyone. Reason
that struck me is because Delicious Orchards is closed on Mondays
and many of the businesses in that area close as well.

Perhaps that's more common than I thought.

Yes, it was, can't speak for now, Irv's sold out.
