    Hello all,

    Now I'm "a cyclist" I think it's time I got an audax or three under my belt.
    I have little hope of getting one inbefore the winter sets in (or maybe
    not?) but I'm after tips as to which event is best for newcomers, in
    particular if any are esp. friendly or not. Shorter ones for now please :-)
    and maybe the flatter sorts. I'm in Manchester, no car either so it's bum a
    lift or train for me. Over to the experts...

    try a 100k first (they sort of have a brief resume before winter sets in).
    An event search on www.audax.uk.net up to 200 km (can't go any lower than
    that) for N England gets:

    I'd like to know which are the friendly ones too. I'd like to know which are
    popular, that have a chance of several gorups forming on the road.

    every Audax has hills, and it seems to be traditional to put the steepest
    one at the end. Never did fathom how a ride gets points but every one I have
    ever ridden with points had them in spades.

    so come and ride the mildy undulating Suffolk Coastal and Byways Audax
    on October 2nd from Blaxhall (YHA 100m down the road), that way you
    avoid any of the AAA rides.

    Indeed, but IME even 0.5 AAA points is a pretty damn hilly ride. And
    don't forget that not all rides are assessed for AAA ratings so some
    pretty hilly rides go unrated - it's always best to check with the
    organiser.
