I use SPD multi-release cleats, and they allow me to move my heel
inward to release from the pedal. And I think that the single-release
SPD cleats also allow this.
Do any other styles of clipless pedals allow heel-in release?
Campy Profit. Haven't tried this on their replacements, Ultegra 6610.
I used to stick my heel into the spokes (occasionally, and lightly)
when I was using the Campy's and a heel-in release, done probably
because I didn't have a good out-move patterned in with the Campy peds.
Although I came up with one real quick a time or two <g>.
Unless you have something that goes ouch when you twist out, I'd
practice twisting out with both feet until it's automatic, in the
interests of safety.
Brief singing the praises of the 6610's: No "fatal flaw" yet after a
couple months' use, nice entry/exit and good walking on the "pontoons".
